World record holder Tobi Amusan has again returned to the headlines in style after a commanding victory in the women’s 100m hurdles at the Rabat Diamond League on Sunday, May 27. The Nigerian sprint hurdler clocked a time of 12.45 seconds, setting a new meet record.

Amusan’s performance broke a seven-year-old mark of 12.51 seconds previously set by Brianna McNeal in 2018. The 2022 world champion delivered a dominant run, pulling away from other competitors right from the gun. Her 12.45 seconds also stands as her season’s best.

Right behind Amusan on the finish line was Dutch hurdler Nadine Visser, who finished second in 12.67 seconds, while Poland’s Pia Skrzyszowska came third in 12.69 seconds.

“More hurdles practice, because I had been doing more sprinting. It was after the first two Diamond League meetings that I knew I had to return to more hurdle drills. Two weeks in, I can tell the difference,” Amusan said after her win.

The Rabat meet marks Amusan’s first major victory of the 2025 season. She had ended the 2024 athletics season on a low note, missing out on the final of the women’s 100m hurdles at the Paris Olympics. Her hopes of making a strong comeback at the World Athletics Relays in China earlier in 2025 were dashed after Nigeria withdrew from the event.

She then finished fourth at both the Xiamen and Shanghai Diamond League meets in May. This morale-boosting win in Rabat comes at a crucial time.

Ahead of the 2025 World Athletics Championships, which begin in August, Amusan is now firmly back in contention as one of Nigeria’s top athletes to watch, alongside Favour Ofili.
