Super Eagles of Nigeria first-choice goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali has exited South African side Chippa United by mutual consent.

Nwabali, 29, joined the Premier Soccer League (PSL) club from Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) side Katsina United in 2022. He made around 70 appearances for the Chilli Boys before his departure was confirmed on Thursday, February 5 2026. 

Chippa United disclosed that the Nigerian international submitted a transfer request, despite having less than one year left on his contract, after signing a three-year extension with the club in 2024.

“Chippa United Football Club confirms that Stanley Nwabali has formally submitted a request to depart the club. After careful consideration, the club has agreed to grant his release,” the club’s statement reads. 

“We would like to sincerely thank Stanley Nwabali for the years of service, commitment, and professionalism he has shown during his time at Chippa United Football Club. His contribution to the club will always be appreciated.”

Nwabali rose to prominence during his impressive run for Chippa United in 2023, which caught the attention of then Super Eagles coach Jose Peseiro. He was subsequently drafted into the national team and quickly established himself as Nigeria’s first-choice goalkeeper. The former Enyimba FC goalkeeper starred for the Super Eagles at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations and has remained a key figure in the squad. He was also a pivotal figure in the Super Eagles’ third-place finish at the recently concluded AFCON 2025. 

The goalkeeper has since shared a farewell message on his social media platforms. “It was more than a family. To my lovely teammates, dear coaches, amazing fans, and the best chairman in the world, as I stand here to say farewell, it is more than a goodbye. I want to say thank you,” he wrote.

With the winter transfer window closed across most of Europe’s top leagues, it remains to be seen whether Nwabali will join another club in Africa or secure a move outside Europe’s central leagues.
