The Super Eagles of Nigeria defeated the Desert Warriors of Algeria 2-0 to set up a blockbuster semifinal clash with Morocco in the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations AFCON.

Second-half goals from strikers Victor Osimhen and Akor Adams were enough for Nigeria, who totally outclassed an Algerian side that had won all of their matches at AFCON 2025 hitherto without conceding a single goal.

Coming off a 3-0 win over Mozambique in their quarterfinal clash, coach Eric Chelle named an unchanged XI, and the chosen Eagles duly maintained the momentum they had built, putting the Desert Warriors on the back foot right from the opening whistle at the Marrakech Stadium.

Chances fell to Osimhen, who struggled to find his early on, but the Galatasaray striker produced a clever layoff to set up his strike partner Adams in a one v one, only for the forward to blast his effort off target. A brief fightback from the Algerians proved ineffective, as Nigeria did everything well but score in the first half.

However, the three-time African champions ensured there would be no repeat of a fruitless dominance in the second half, as Osimhen rose highest to calmly head home Bruno Onyemaechi’s pinpoint cross for Nigeria’s opener a few minutes into the second half. About ten minutes later, he turned provider for Adams following a perfectly weighted pass from Alex Iwobi, with the striker calmly rounding the Algerian goalkeeper before tucking home the Super Eagles’ second.

The Super Eagles remained dominant and should have grabbed at least another goal for their efforts, but they will be pleased regardless, as they convincingly outclassed Algeria from start to finish across every department and metric to go into the semifinals. Their passage into the semis makes it their 17th in 21 AFCON appearances, more than any other country in AFCON history.

Host nation Morocco stands in their way of reaching their eighth final, after their last appearance in the AFCON 2023 campaign where they lost to host nation Côte d’Ivoire.
