Nigerian heritage racing prospect Ugo Ugochukwu delivered a landmark moment in his rising career on Sunday, claiming his first victory in the FIA Formula 3 Championship with a commanding performance in the feature race at Albert Park Circuit in Australia.

The 18-year-old Campos Racing driver fought back from an early setback to seize control of the race and lead the field home. 

Starting near the front of the grid, Ugochukwu briefly dropped to third at the start as pole sitter Théophile Nael held the lead and TRIDENT’s Freddie Slater surged into second. The teenager quickly regrouped, and by lap two, he had overtaken Slater and then made a decisive move on Nael at Turn 9 to take the lead.

Once out front, Ugochukwu controlled the race with impressive composure on the tight Melbourne street circuit. Two Safety Car periods compressed the field, but the Campos driver maintained his advantage and eventually crossed the line first as the race finished under Safety Car conditions.

Slater finished second, while ART Grand Prix driver Taito Kato inherited third place after time penalties were applied to Nael and Noah Stromsted.

The victory marks Ugochukwu’s maiden win in Formula 3 and gives him the early lead in the drivers’ championship standings after the opening round with 25 points.

Speaking after the race, the teenager said he was pleased with the team’s strong start to the season after recovering from the slow launch off the grid.

“So super pleased, my first win in F3,” he said. “It’s been a perfect start to the season, we have been quick all weekend. P2 of the line, fell back a little at the start but managed to make my way back through to the lead and from there I had a nice gap until the last Safety Car. Super happy and thank you to the whole team.”

Born in New York to Nigerian supermodel Oluchi Onweagba and an Italian father, Ugochukwu has become a figure of growing interest among Nigerian motorsport followers eager to see a driver with Nigerian roots rise through the ranks toward Formula One.

His career trajectory has been impressive. He finished third in the British F4 Championship, runner-up in the Italian F4 Championship with Prema Racing and later became the first American in more than four decades to win the prestigious Macau Grand Prix in 2024.

Ugochukwu was also part of the McLaren Driver Development Programme between 2021 and 2025, gaining experience within one of Formula One’s most established teams.
