It was a WrestleMania debut like never before for Oba Femi at WrestleMania 42 Night 2 in Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas on Sunday, April 19, as the Nigerian took 10-time WWE Champion Brock Lesnar to the cleaners in under five minutes.

For anyone who has followed Oba Femi since his days as a shot put champion at the University of Alabama in the United States, through his rise through the ranks in the wrestling world, capturing the NXT North American Championship and becoming WWE NXT Champion, this moment was a long time coming. So when the Nigerian superstar answered Brock Lesnar’s open WrestleMania challenge earlier in March, and the WWE powers that be sanctioned it, it became a must-watch, placing the spotlight on the combat athlete born Isaac Odugbesan. 

The clash, one of the marquee bouts at WrestleMania 42 on Sunday, was as entertaining as it was symbolic of a passing of the torch. For all that Lesnar remained capable of, and he showed plenty of it — ramming Femi into the steel post, landing his signature F-5, and showboating with the bravado that defined his peak — Femi ultimately overcame the onslaught. He sealed the win with a thunderous chokeslam, followed by his “Fall From Grace” powerbomb.

More telling than the win itself was what it signalled: the end of an era. Lesnar appeared to have called it quits, removing his gloves and boots in the centre of the ring, waving to the crowd in what looked like an apparent retirement.

It would be too easy, and frankly incorrect, to reduce him to a washed opponent. What we saw was Brock Lesnar that defined WrestleMania, only that he met a better opponent on the night. 

If anything, the victory only strengthens Femi’s case. It stands as the closest thing to a true statement win he is likely to get, a definitive reflection of his abilities and a solid foundation on which to build his main roster career. More than anything, he has proved he has the goods. His victory over Lesnar will draw greater attention to his name and set him on a path to further success. More so, Femi’s emphatic arrival, coinciding with WWE’s transitional period, with the likes of John Cena and AJ Styles already retired, signals that he is part of a new crop ready to take on the mantle.
