The Lagos State Rugby Association, in collaboration with the Ibudo Rugby Club, is set to host the “Governor’s Cup” inter-school Rugby 7 competition for secondary schools in Lagos State. The highly anticipated event, which will feature 15 secondary schools, is scheduled to take place on October 18th and 19th, 2023.
This two-day championship will see students from both boys’ and girls’ teams competing in the U-15 and U-18 categories. The event aims to showcase the wealth of rugby talent within Lagos State and promote the sport among young athletes.
The tournament is to be held at CMS Grammar School, Bariga, Lagos State. Michael Ogunbiyi, the chairman of the Ibudo Rugby Association, expressed his excitement about the event, stating, “It’s more a case of showcasing the talent in Lagos State. Ibudo Academy has held tournaments before for the schools. This time we thought it would make a greater impact to have the 2 age group categories showcase in both boys and girls categories.”
Furthermore, Ogunbiyi highlighted the significance of the tournament, saying, “Using the tag provided a synergy with the Lagos Rugby Association as they had previously spoken of a governors cup in Lagos. This will be the first time having 500 kids in one place in Lagos in the name of rugby.”
The competition promises to be an exciting and highly competitive showcase of the emerging rugby talent within Lagos State and offers a fantastic opportunity for students to engage in a thrilling sporting event. Stay tuned for more updates on the Governor’s Cup inter-school Rugby 7 championship as the event unfolds.
