Nigerian pop culture didn’t become global by accident. Behind every artiste, viral songs, music videos, and iconic fashion moments, is a network of women shaping how the culture looks, sounds, and moves.

Despite the industry’s male-dominated nature, Nigerian women are leaving indelible marks on the industry. From A&Rs discovering the next stars to stylists defining visual identities and DJs building underground scenes, and more, these creatives are quietly engineering the future of Nigerian entertainment.

In this Women’s History Month, we highlight 10 Nigerian women who are outstandingly leading in reshaping Nigerian pop culture.

Rima Tahini

Behind the scenes of Africa’s biggest label, Mavin Global is the reckoning force: Rima Tahini Ighodaro, whose mission isn’t just shaping the musical direction of artistes but also empowering them to create their own trajectory. Transitioning from venture capital into music, Tahini Ighodaro has ascended to become the Senior VP of A&R and Creatives at Mavin Global.

Her role in not just aiding the expansion of Africa’s premier label since she joined, but also in the birth and development of Afrobeats superstars Rema and Ayra Starr, has been nothing short of remarkable. From launching the artistes’ careers — helping them develop their sound and visual identities, come up with music video concepts, and determine album-release dates — The Lebanese-Sierra Leonean executive has been instrumental in the global recognition of the two artistes since they joined the label in 2019.

At Mavin, she leads the 10-person A&R team that works with the label’s roster to both actualise and reimagine their creative vision for their music – setting up studio sessions and liaising with the label’s other departments to maximise the artistes’ full potential. Her position also extends to developing artistes in the Mavin Academy, from the moment they’re signed, nurtured and trained to when the label officially unveils them to the world.

Uzoamaka Power

While the Nollywood industry brims with many creative talents, filmmaker and actor Uzoamaka Power has risen to become a powerhouse. The writer, actor, and director possesses a mastery of telling deep-seated emotional stories that resonate beyond the surface.

Her appearances in television and film projects like MTV Shuga, Diiche, and feature-length films including Mami Wata, The Weekend, and With Difficulty Comes Ease distinguished her as a promising talent in the film industry.

With a canny eye for cinematic storytelling, her career spanned into short films where she starred, wrote, and directed her debut film, My Body, God’s Temple — one of the short films in the Zikoko Life anthology. Whether on stage or behind the camera, her distinct versatility has cemented her status as one of the new generation of female Nigerian creatives redefining storytelling across film and television.

Beverly Munachiso Charles 

Behind the success of every artiste lies a visionary. For breakout star Mavo, lies manager and A&R Beverly Munachiso Joan Charles. The music executive has played a pivotal role in shaping the trajectory of Mavo’s career as his co-manager and A&R since 2023.

Her expertise as a creative director, stylist, and talent manager, alongside her background in law, has not only built his sound and brand from an underground movement into the face of the new wave of African music acts.

As Head of Marketing & PR Strategy at FreeMe Digital and co-label Manager at Kilogbede Records Limited, she continues to drive innovative campaigns and rollouts that are redefining how African music is distributed and consumed. She has led innovative rollouts for artists including Mavo, FirstKlaz, 6uff and Yellw Family, building campaigns that drive authenticity, creativity and culture. Beverly is part of the new generation of female music executives, cementing her status in the industry.

Jade Busola

Behind the commercial success of some Afrobeats artistes is the quiet force of Jade Busola pulling the strings from the shadows. Jade Busola is a prominent talent manager and A&R executive widely acclaimed for her influential role in the global Afrobeats movement.

As a master strategist in the music industry, Jade has held A&R positions at several major record labels, including 0207 Def Jam, Atlantic Records UK, and EMI Records, where she has made a major impact by scouting and nurturing musical talent.

Being the manager for Grammy-nominated and serial hitmaker producer London, she has become a key architect behind some of Afrobeat’s biggest hits. Alongside managing London, she also founded Rogue Collective, a talent management and publishing company.

Aniko

In Nigeria’s rapidly evolving electronic music scene, Aniko deserves credit for the widespread dominance and cultural relevance of African dance music. A DJ, artist-producer, and the founder of the leading rave Group Therapy, Aniko has become one of the key players shaping Lagos’ underground rave culture.

Known for genre-blending sets that weave together afro house, deep house, techno, and progressive electronic sounds, she has built a reputation for high-energy performances that connect deeply with audiences. Through Group Therapy, Aniko has also created a platform to spotlight EDM talent in an industry largely dominated by Afrobeats, helping cultivate a growing community of DJs and producers.

Her influence now stretches beyond Nigeria, with appearances on global platforms such as Boiler Room and HÖR Berlin, and at festivals across Africa and Europe, making her one of the voices pushing African EDM culture into the global conversation.

Dunsin Wright

Behind the fashion statements that shape the visual identity of global star Tems is the stylist, creative director and fashion consultant Dunsin Wright. Her visionary approach to styling has placed her as one of the leading voices in contemporary African fashion.

As the in-house stylist for Grammy winner Tems, Wright has orchestrated some of the singer’s iconic looks across diverse performances, music videos, and global stages, including her debut at the Oscars, the Met Gala, the Grammys, and the British Fashion Awards. Her styling choices have consistently reinforced Tems’ identity as an artist whose visual presence matches the emotional depth of her music.

Through their long-standing partnership, her work has been featured in international campaigns, including Tommy Hilfiger. Beyond her work with Tems, Wright has styled for fashion magazines and international acts including SZA and Latto.

Olamide Ademeso 

Olamide “Lammy A” Ademeso is one of the few industry executives committed to the growth and sustainability of young Nigerian creatives. The music, media and marketing executive has established herself as a virtuoso in the entertainment and hospitality industries.

With an exceptional portfolio spanning sales and marketing, music distribution, film, live event curation, product management, and more, she has led teams and projects at prominent companies including 365-Agency, KVLT WRLD, Even In The Day, and EMPIRE Africa.

She is also the founder of The DIY Collective, a self-sustaining ecosystem for budding and aspiring creatives. As the program’s director, Olamide has been using the passion project for 4 years to bridge the gap between young and established creatives with industry resources.

Temitope Olowo-ake

Temitope Olowo-Ake (popularly known as Temitoyourscreen) has risen to prominence in the African creative and music industry. Currently serving as the Digital Lead at Native Records, Olowo-Ake has built a reputation as a marketing and growth strategist within the Nigerian entertainment space. She is also the founder of DiscoveryDeckNG ( now Stamped and Spun), a platform dedicated to talent discovery and creative industry insights.

At Native Records, she manages marketing and digital leads for the label and was instrumental in the release of ODUMODUBLVCK’s critically acclaimed album Eziokwu. Her impact in driving the sound and business of African music has been notably recognised by the MBA for Africa Music Business Academy and TurnTable Charts.

Director Pink

Professionally known as Director Pink, Praise Onyeagwalam has cemented her status as one of the leading creatives in music video direction, cinematography, and filmmaking in Nigeria.

The award-winning filmmaker and editor isn’t just one of the most sought-after creators; she has also redefined storytelling with her emotive videos that reflect African culture. As the head of her film company, Pinkline Films, she has become a household name in the Nigerian music industry, working with an eclectic array of artists, including Phyno, Burna Boy, Chike, Joeboy, Simi, and Tiwa Savage.

As the founder of Pinkline Academy, the Pink is committed to training aspiring creatives in the art and craft of filmmaking and cinematography.

Simi Badiru

Simi Badiru, one of the influential voices behind the scenes, has played a pivotal role in shaping Afrobeats and culture, while standing as a connection between artistes and the platforms that amplify their voices.

As Head of Talent Relations at Trace Naija, her work with artistes is an exemplary testament to her expertise and seasoned experience, helping facilitate collaborations, interviews, and media opportunities that connect Nigerian talent to wider audiences. Badiru is also the co-host of the culture and music podcast F&S Uncensored, a platform known for its candid conversations about the Nigerian music industry, pop culture, and the realities of working within the creative space. The podcast has hosted names including Pheelz, Fave, and BOJ.

Operating at the intersection of media, talent relations, and cultural commentary, Simi Badiru has also established herself as a strategist, storyteller and playlist curator, working with brands like Apple Music, Audiomack, and BetKing.
