Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) President Ibrahim Musa Gusau has resigned from his position, alongside the federation’s Executive Committee and General Secretary, Dr Mohammed Sanusi.

Gusau announced his decision on Thursday, August 27, during a press conference in Abuja, ending a tenure that has come under growing scrutiny over the state of Nigerian football.

“After consultation with family, friends and stakeholders, I just want to tell you that I have decided to resign my position,” Gusau said. “I have also advised my board members to resign.”

Gusau was elected NFF president at the federation’s 78th Elective Congress in September 2022 and was already vying to retain the position for the next four years.

However, the failure of the Super Falcons to qualify for the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup, after exiting the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) in the quarter-final,  mounted pressure on the administrator. It’s the first time the 10-time African champions will miss the women’s Mundial since the competition began in 1991. The men’s senior national team, the Super Eagles, also failed to qualify for the 2026 World Cup earlier in the year.

The NFF has also faced scrutiny over the management of funds released by the Federal Government to address outstanding payments owed to national team players and officials. The reported investigation into a N17 billion intervention fund has added to the pressure surrounding the federation’s administration.

Gusau said he was leaving the NFF in a better position than he found it, despite the recent failures involving the national teams, and said his decision would allow others to contribute to the development of Nigerian football.

His call for the Executive Committee to also resign could have significant implications for the federation’s leadership structure and its planned elections on September 27 in Lafia, Nasarawa State.

The extent of the changes within the NFF and the arrangements that will follow Gusau’s resignation are expected to become clearer in the coming days.
