C.J. Obasi’s ‘Mami Wata’ Set to Hit Nigerian Cinemas in September

C.J. Obasi’s third feature-length film and the much anticipated West African folktale, Mami Wata, will finally premiere at cinemas across Nigeria. Obasi took to Twitter to make this exciting announcement.

Mami Wata is one of the most anticipated films by a filmmaker. It has already made its world debut at Sundance earlier this year and has since been screened worldwide, receiving exceptional reviews, numerous awards, and securing international deals.

The intriguing tale which explores the folklore of the Mami Wata, a fearsome mermaid goddess revered in West Africa, has obtained several accolades. It is the first-ever Nigerian film to win a competition prize at the prestigious Sundance Film Festival.

The film boasts a stellar cast comprising Rita Edochie, Uzoamaka Aniunoh, Evelyne Ily Juhen, Kelechi Udegbe, and Tough Bone.

Mami Wata is produced by Oge Obasi, Lagos-based Fiery Film Company, and repped internationally by CAA Media Finance. It is edited by Nathan Delannoy, and features striking black-and-white cinematography by the talented Brazilian, DP Lílis Soares.
