In a thrilling encounter on Thursday, Nigeria’s Super Falcons pulled off a shock 3-2 victory against co-hosts  Australia in their second Group B match. This hard-fought win not only propelled the Falcons to the top of the group with four points but also marked Africa’s first victory in this year’s tournament, co-hosted by Australia and New Zealand. The triumph is particularly significant as it is the  nine-time African champions’ first-ever win against Australia at the Women’s World Cup in their second meeting.

The Super Falcons displayed resilience and determination, showcasing the true spirit of champions throughout the match. Head coach Randy Waldrum’s strategic changes in the starting 11 proved pivotal, with Uchenna Kanu, Rasheedat Ajibade, and Halimotu Ayinde earning starting berths and making crucial contributions to the team’s success.

The Aussies took the lead in added time of the first half when Emily Van Egmond skillfully slotted home a low cross from the left. However, the Falcons responded with vigor, and it was Uchenna Kanu who pulled them level just five minutes later with a powerful left-footed strike beyond the Australian keeper. Kanu’s goal injected new energy into the Nigerian side, and they continued to press forward relentlessly.

The Falcons’ perseverance paid off in the 65th minute when Osinachi Ohale leaped to head the ball into an empty net after the opposition keeper failed to clear a header across the goal. The lead was further extended when Asisat Oshoala capitalized on a poor header from an Australian defender, seizing the opportunity to slot the ball home with precision.

However, the game took an unexpected turn with additional 11 minutes added due to injuries to Ohale and Ayinde. In the final moments of added time, the hosts took advantage of the extended play and managed to score, narrowing the margin to 3-2. Despite the late scare, the Super Falcons held firm to secure a historic victory that reverberated through the football world.

The win not only marked Nigeria’s rise to the top of Group B but also instilled a sense of pride and optimism among fans and players alike. The Super Falcons displayed their prowess and showcased the strength of African women’s football on the global stage.

With this significant triumph, Nigeria’s Super Falcons have set their sights on the next challenge as they prepare to face the Republic of Ireland on Monday, July 31. The team’s strong display against Australia has raised expectations, and fans are eagerly anticipating their continued success in the tournament.
