Big Brother Naija (BBNaija) is a Nigerian reality television show that follows the format of the international Big Brother franchise. Housemates compete in various tasks and challenges, intending to avoid eviction and ultimately win a cash prize and other rewards. The reality show first premiered in 2006, then went on a hiatus, returned in 2017, and now has a total of eight seasons. All roads are set as the ninth season is scheduled to air on Sunday, July 28, 2024, at 7 pm on Africa Magic channels and then 24/7 viewing on DSTV channel 198, GOtv channel 29 and Showmax.

 

Biggie’s house comprises three things: chaotic drama, competition and romantic emotions. So, before we dive into what twists and turns this new season has in store for us, let’s take a look at unforgettable moments from the reality TV show so far.

 

LOVE FROM BIGGIE’S HOUSE

 

Despite being a competitive platform, Biggie’s house birthed a lot of romantic ships which eventually became serious relationships outside of the house.

  • Bam Bam and Teddy A

 

Real names Bamike “BamBam” Olawunmi and Tope “Teddy A” Adenibuyan from the Double Wahala season three started as an item inside the house and have now become legal spouses.

They got engaged in August 2019, had a traditional wedding in September 2019, and a white wedding in Dubai in November 2019. They are blessed with two children together.

  • Gedoni and Khafi 

 

Gedoni and Khafi whose real names are Gedoni Ekpata and Khafi Kareem from the Pepper Dem Season Four, are the second BBNaija couple whose relationship has flourished beyond the house. Gedoni proposed to Khafi on Christmas Day in 2019. They tied the knot in September 2020 and welcomed their first child in 2021.

  • Bella and Sheggz 

 

Real names, Chidimma “Bella” Okagbue and Segun “Sheggz” Olusemo from season Seven Level Up. They are officially a couple, having been known for their close bond during the show and maintaining their relationship after it ended.

Big Brother’s house is never short of chaos and drama and over the years, there has been more excitement than we can keep track of. Here are just a few notable moments:

  • Cee-C and Tobi’s Drama in Season Two

 

Cee-C and Tobi’s drama in Big Brother Naija Season 3 (not Season 2) was one of the most memorable and intense storylines of the season. Their relationship began with flirtation and seemed to have potential, but tensions soon emerged. The relationship was characterized by a power struggle. 

 

Their arguments were often loud and public, leading to moments where they exchanged harsh words and insults. Their fights were so intense that they became central talking points for viewers. Cee-C’s breakdowns and emotional outbursts were a significant part of the drama. She would often express frustration and disappointment, sometimes directing her anger towards Tobi. By the end of the season, the relationship between Cee-C and Tobi remained strained. 

 

 

  • Tacha’s Fights and Eventual Disqualification in Season Four

 

Tacha’s fights contributed to her reputation as one of the most controversial and memorable housemates in BBNaija history. One of the most talked-about conflicts of the season was between Tacha and Mercy Eke. Their fights often involved intense arguments and personal insults. The situation escalated dramatically during a heated confrontation on September 27, 2019, which led to Tacha’s disqualification from the house. The fight included a physical altercation where Tacha reportedly threw a basket at Mercy, leading to her being removed from the house.

She had a notable clash with Seyi Awolowo over various issues, including personal space and perceived slights. Their arguments were characterized by sharp words and heightened emotions, contributing to the show’s drama.

Tacha also had disputes with Khafi Kareem, often involving misunderstandings and disagreements. Their fights included verbal altercations that reflected Tacha’s confrontational style. Tacha also had a few disagreements with fellow housemate Omashola Oburoh, which sometimes involved raised voices and personal comments. Their arguments were part of the broader conflicts in the house.

Tacha’s confrontations were some of the most dramatic moments of Season 4, significantly influencing the show’s narrative and viewer engagement. The altercation with Mercy Eke was particularly impactful, as it led to Tacha’s disqualification, making it a pivotal moment in the season.

 

  • Seyi’s Misogynistic Statement in Season Eight 

 

During Seyi Awolowo’s time in the All Stars season, he made a misogynistic statement which set the internet ablaze. In his words, “I get shino account for my son, miscellaneous account. I get that account for my son, my guy’s son… I will give them the keys to the guest house, they will run train on people’s daughters”

Fellow housemates condemned his statements and actions, with  Lagos State Domestic and Sexual Violence Agency (DSVA Lagos) also describing it as a harmful contributor to the culture of violence and abuse.

 

  • Ilebaye and Cee-C’s Altercation in Season Eight

 

The altercation began with a heated argument between Ilebaye and Cee-C. The argument escalated quickly, with both housemates exchanging harsh words and personal insults. Things got intense when Ilebaye shoved Cee-C It eventually led to a strike from Biggie. However, fans and lovers of the show had a different feel to the punishment served by Big Brother because according to some viewers, her actions had warranted an instant disqualification.

This particular drama led to the audience question Biggie’s firm rules for the All Stars season in comparison to other sets. 

 

 

EPIC WINS SO FAR

  • Mercy Eke Winning BBNaija Season Four 

 

In 2019, Mercy won the Pepper Dem season, thereby becoming the first female to ever win on the BBNaija franchise. She went home with ₦30 million cash prize, a brand new SUV from Innoson Motors, a trip to Dubai for two, a home makeover by Scanfrost, a year’s supply of Pepsi and One Africa Fest VVIP experience, a year’s supply of Indomie noodles and Munch It, a brand new Oppo smartphone, a bonus prize of two VIP tickets to watch a European Football final game, courtesy of Bet9ja.

Her return to the All Stars Season Eight showcased the enduring strength of her fame and fan base, as she emerged as the first runner-up.

  • Laycon’s Victory in 2020

 

Olamilekan Agbeleshe, better known as Laycon, secured a landmark victory when he won Big Brother Naija season five, Lockdown, in 2020. His win is one of the most impactful in the show’s history, marked by a record-breaking number of votes and a consistently memorable presence that beguiled the nation throughout his stay in the house.  

He was also the first housemate to record social media followers of over one million, which marked a new light on the public traction the reality show drew.

 

  • Ilebaye Winning BBNaija Season Eight

 

In 2023, Ilebaye Odiniya won the All Stars season, the first of its kind. The victory made her the youngest winner ever at age 22. She went home with ₦50 million cash, a brand new SUV from Innoson Motors, a trip for two to Dubai, a house makeover by Scanfrost, a year’s supply of Pepsi, Indomie noodles, and Munch It, a year’s supply of a major brand of personal care products, and an exclusive experience with One Africa Fest. The prize package included various other luxury items and experiences, making it one of the most substantial prize winnings in the show’s history.
