Nigerian chef Hilda Bassey, popularly known as Hilda Baci, has officially clinched a new Guinness World Record for the largest serving of Nigerian-style jollof rice, with a staggering total weight of 8,780 kilogrammes (19,356 lb 9 oz).

Guinness World Records (GWR), which lists world records both of human achievements and the extremes of the natural world, confirmed Baci’s achievement in a post on X on Monday.

The organisation said the new world record was set by the celebrity chef in partnership with the food brand Gino.

The record-breaking cooking event, which took place at the Eko Hotel and Suites, Victoria Island, Lagos, on Friday, September 12, 2025, attracted a massive crowd of supporters, celebrities, and food enthusiasts who gathered to witness the attempt at history.

Baci said she poured 4,000 kilogrammes of basmati rice, 500 cartons of tomato concentrate, 750 kilogrammes of oil, and 600 kilogrammes of onions into a six-metre-wide steel cauldron.

Although she initially planned to cook 250 bags of rice, she cut it to 200 bags to stay within the 20,000-kilogramme weight limit. After the attempt, she said it took “nine hours of fire, passion and teamwork” and 1,200 kg of gas to produce “16,600 plates of rice served with joy, love and community.”

The Akwa Ibom-born chef was aided by ten assistants in red uniforms wielding massive wooden spoons, stirring the mammoth concoction while DJs and musicians kept the crowd entertained.

Baci first rose to global fame in May 2023 when she claimed the record for the longest cooking marathon (individual) with a time of 93 hours, 11 minutes.

Her latest world record further cements her reputation as one of Nigeria’s most prominent chefs and cultural ambassadors.
