Gbubemi Ejeye shines in Farmer's Bride

Gbubemi Ejeye is a Nigerian actress and model. She is famous for her outstanding performance in the films Citation (2020), Far from Home (2022), Shuga (2023), The House of Secrets (202), All’s Fair In Love and Farmer’s Bride. She began by performing on stage, and in November 2018 at Terra Kulture, she performed Color Me Pink with a cast about breast cancer.

Amongst a long list of movies released in September, Farmer’s Bride stands out as a simple yet beautiful film. But it’s not just the story that stays on, it’s Ejeye’s exhilarating performance that leaves a satisfying feel. And that’s why she is our actor for the month of September. Farmer’s Bride is actually Ejeye’s first lead role in a cinematic release, which makes the performance even more profound.

Centered around her character, Funmi, the feature film tells the story of a young beautiful lady forced to marry an old farmer. She eventually falls in love with his nephew and they hit off to risky yet passionate intimacy. Their sneaky acts give birth to a pregnancy which is considered a taboo.

Although Ejeye’s character is far from being a damsel in distress, she still elicits empathy. We follow her journey from despair, to discovering risky love, to the fury of betrayal, and finally, to seeking revenge. Despite the many emotional shifts and her character’s evolution, the essence of Funmi remains consistently engaging.

The film’s rural setting and the cultural expectations placed on Funmi added another layer to Ejeye’s performance. She navigates the tension between tradition and personal choice. Ejeye’s ability to embody this conflict is one of the film’s greatest strengths,  torn between duty and desire.

Her performance isn’t one devoid of the amazing support of her co-actors who include Bakre, Femi Branch and Mercy Aigbe. Being an antagonist is one thing, but convincing the audience of your character’s perspective is another. In Farmer’s Bride, many viewers blamed Femi (Tobi Bakre) for the tragic outcome, largely because Gbubemi Ejeye, as Funmi, portrayed her character’s struggles so convincingly. The believability of a story is what stays with the audience, blurring the line between fiction and reality.

For her first lead position, Ejeye managed to manipulate it in a way that will last in the minds of the audience. Many actors have struggled to deliver a beautiful performance when the spotlight focuses on them. But it seems the actress took the opportunity to announce herself to the industry and the audience at large.
