In a post on social media, Nigerian filmmaker Kunle Afolayan unveiled the cast for the renewed Anikulapo series. Returning faces to the upcoming release include Sola Sobowale, Bimbo Ademoye and Lateef Adedimeji. While new faces include Kie Kie, Teniola Aladese, Antar Laniyan, Joke Muyiwa, Saidi Balogun, Adeoluwa Okusaga, and Tayo Faniran.

The new season sheds light on Nigerian history and culture of the slave trade. It picks up from the previous season which ended with Saro making his way to the great beyond for good.

Afolayan in his post also shared the intent of the production to showcase the Nigerian culture to the world. “We take pride in telling our stories authentically, and this series is a powerful reflection of Nigerian culture and history”, he stated

Further describing the upcoming project as a means to show global connections in the Nigerian history as well as the rich culture it wields. “This season will explore the complex realities of the slave trade, with actors from Portugal, Ghana, and Nigeria, showing the global connections in our history.”

Principal photography began on August 1 and wrapped up on September 19 making it a 50-day run. The production location expanded from the Kunle Afolayan Film Village and Resort in Igbojaye in Oyo State to Ghana. The expansion was a result of a collaboration between KAP Motion Pictures and  Ghana’s National Film Authority.

Anikulapo season 2 is scheduled to debut in 2025 with no precise date revealed.
