Wizkid

Looking back on Wizkid’s trajectory over the past few years, the Nigerian hitmaker has become one of the globe’s most indispensable musical figures. From 2021’s Made in Lagos, which introduced his refined and velvety blend of Afro-R&B, to 2022’s More Love, Less Ego, an exploration of diasporic pop influences, Wizkid has consistently expanded the scope of his sound. Thus, over a decade into a career that has elevated Nigerian pop to the global stage, Wizkid has learned to say more with less. His latest album, Morayo, named after his beloved late mother, demonstrates this but sharpens it with a newfound sincerity. Even though the album does not break new ground it has several shining moments — and “Slow,” Wizkid’s partnership with French-Cameroonian singer Anaïs Cardot, is one of its most luminous.

On “Slow,” the Nigerian star continues to evolve. The track flirts with R&B and soul influences to produce something smooth and languorous, taking a step beyond Wiz’s usual formula. Wizkid has always had an eye for collaborators who can bring something unique to his sound, and Cardot is no exception. The song’s lyrics are straightforward but potent, revolving around a subtle, almost voyeuristic energy. Some of the other tracks on the project teeter into predictability, but “Slow” offers something distinct: a reminder of Wizkid’s ability to make music that feels alive in its quietness.
