The list below has been broken down into movies to expect from our Nigerian film industry and international releases that will also be made available this month.

 

Nollywood Movies

 

With Difficulty Comes Ease

 

Korede Azeez’s second feature film, With Difficulty Comes Ease, explores themes of strength, friendship, and the challenges of religious and cultural expectations. The story follows Zainab (played by Uzoamaka Aniunoh) as she navigates the complexities of life and loss after her husband’s death. The film also stars Michelle Dede, Ummi Aisha Baba-Ahmed, and Caleb Richards. With Difficulty Comes Ease will be available on Prime Video starting August 1.

The Betrayed

 

Zulumoke Oyibo makes her directorial debut with The Betrayed written by Naz Onuzo and Tosin Anyafulu. The film centers on Amarachi (Uche Montana), who appears to have a perfect and enviable life with her family. Her world is shattered when her husband (Gabriel Afolayan) is arrested for the murder of his girlfriend. The cast includes Ibrahim Suleiman, Jemima Osunde, Adunni Ade, Vine Olugu, Stephanie Zibili, and Aderonke Onuoha. The Betrayed will be available in cinemas starting August 2.

Something Like Gold

 

A woman embarks on a journey of rediscovery and love after her life is upended when she is left at the altar. As she navigates the challenges of rebuilding her life, she must also deal with the loss of her father’s wealth. Directed by Kayode Kasum and starring Sandra Okunzuwa, Kunle Remi, Teniola Aladese, and Mercy Johnson-Okojie, Something Like Gold enjoyed a successful run in Nigerian cinemas in 2023 and will begin streaming on Netflix on August 16.

 

 

 

 

Force Empire

 

Directed by Uduak Patrick, Force Empire is set to premiere in Nigerian cinemas on August 23. This drama follows a Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) who is determined to identify the person responsible for assaulting and humiliating her protégé. Her quest to uncover the culprit and expose corrupt officers brings her into conflict with her superiors. The film stars Richard Mofe Damijo, Nse Ikpe-Etim, and Mercy Aigbe.

 

 

 

 

Tokunbo 

 

Gideon Okeke stars in an action-drama directed by Ramsey Nouah titled Tokunbo. It tells the story of a former car smuggler who must race against time to rescue a kidnapped girl. Featuring Adunni Ade, Darasinmi Nnadi, Tosin Adeyemi, and Funlola Aofiyebi-Raimi, the feature film will commence streaming on Netflix from August 23.

The Weekend

 

After an official debut at the Tribeca Festival earlier in the year. Sylvia Daniel Oriahi’s psychological thriller will be released at the Nigerian cinemas on August 30. It delves into the complexities of in-law relationships while addressing political, social, and cultural trauma. The film features Bucci Franklin, Uzoamaka Aniunoh, Gloria Anozie, James Gardiner, Meg Otanwa, and Brutus Richards.

Evil Dead Rise

 

An American supernatural horror film and the fifth installment in the Evil Dead film series. The film stars Lily Sullivan and Alyssa Sutherland as two estranged sisters trying to survive and protect their family from a demonic force known as deadites. Also starring Morgan Davies, Gabrielle Echols, and Nell Fisher, coming to Showmax on August 5.

 

 

 

 

The Umbrella Academy (Final Season)

 

Pack your briefcases and get ready to bid farewell to our infamous siblings! Aidan Gallagher, David Castañeda, Elliot Page, Robert Sheehan, Emmy Raver-Lampman, and Tom Hopper return for the final chapter of The Umbrella Academy on the 8th on Netflix. Kingsman: The Golden Circle

 

The second installment in the popular Kingsman series is coming to Netflix on August 8. Starring Taron Egerton, Channing Tatum, Julianne Moore, Pedro Pascal, Colin Firth, and Mark Strong, the film follows the surviving Kingsman agents as they join forces with their American counterparts to take down a ruthless drug cartel after their headquarters is destroyed.

 

 

 

Fargo S5

 

In the fifth season of Fargo, the anthology series known for its dark comedy and crime drama, a seemingly ordinary housewife finds herself targeted by a ruthless sheriff from a neighbouring county. The season stars Jennifer Jason Leigh, Lamorne Morris, Richa Moorjani, Joe Keery, and Sam Spruell. Available on Showmax from August 13.   

 

 

 

Emily in Paris (Season 4 Part 1)

Talk To Me

 

The supernatural horror film Talk to Me comes from the makers of Everything Everywhere All At Once and Uncut Gems. The film follows a group of teenagers who discover they can contact spirits using a mysterious severed and embalmed hand. It stars Sophie Wilde, Alexandra Jensen, Joe Bird, Otis Dhanji, Miranda Otto, and Zoe Terakes. Following its initial debut in 2022, it is slated to commence Showmax streaming on the 15th.

 

 

 

 

Jackpot!

 

Action-comedy starring John Cena, Awkwafina and Simu Liu will make its Prime Video drop on the 15th. Directed by Paul Feig, the story follows a struggling actress who upon winning the lottery discovers that the state of California allows anyone until sundown to murder the winner and claim the prize money without consequences.

 

 

 

 

Alien: Romulus

 

A group of young space colonists scavenging a derelict space station encounters the most terrifying life form in the seventh instalment of the Alien franchise. This thrilling continuation of the beloved sci-fi horror franchise stars Cailee Spaeny, David Jonsson, Archie Renaux, Isabela Merced, Spike Fearn, and Aileen Wu. Alien fans, mark your calendars—this film is coming to cinemas near you on August 16.

 

 

 

 

The Union

 

Academy Award-winning actor Halle Berry takes the lead in latest action thriller. Also starring Mark Wahlberg, The Union follows a construction worker roped into the espionage world by his former high school girlfriend. The feature film is slated to debut on Netflix on August 16.

 

 

 

 

The Blackening

 

On August 22, Showmax welcomes 2022 horror and comedy which will star Grace Byers, Jermaine Fowler, Dewayne Perkins, Sinqua Wallis, and Yvonne Orji. Seven friends who go away for the weekend find themselves trapped in a cabin with a killer who has a vendetta. They must use their street smarts and knowledge of horror movies against the murderer to stay alive. 

 

 

 

 

Industry (S3)

 

Season three of Industry on Showmax follows a group of young graduates competing for coveted permanent positions at Pierpoint & Co, a prestigious investment bank in London and exploring the high-stakes world of finance. It stars Marisa Abela, Myha’la Herrold, Harry Lawtey, David Jonsson and Ken Leung on August 26.

20 years after their notorious tabloid romance, a married couple buckles under the pressure when a Hollywood actress meets them to do research for a film about their past. This dark comedy film stars Natalie Portman, Julianne Moore, Charles Melton, Elizabeth Yu and Cory Michael Smith. The 2023 film is coming to Showmax on August 29.

 

 

 

 

The Deliverance

 

Lee Daniels returns with a new offering, this time venturing into the horror-thriller genre with The Deliverance. Based on a true story, the film chronicles a family in Indiana who encounter strange, demonic occurrences, leading them and their community to believe that their house is a portal to hell. Starring Andra Day, Mo’Nique, Aunjanue Ellis-Taylor, and Glenn Close, the movie will be available on Netflix, on August 30.
