B Side, Fashion & Style

How Social Media Is Ruining Personal Style

Fashion is fleeting, but true style? That’s your signature—unshaken by trends, uniquely yours, and never out of season.

Personal style seems to have taken a backseat with the rise of television, Tiktok, Instagram and Pinterest. The line between fashion and style has become increasingly blurred. Fashion is like a new viral app—everyone’s excited about it for a moment, then it’s quickly replaced by the next big thing. Style, on the other hand, is like your favorite pair of jeans: reliable, comfortable, and uniquely yours.

Today, many people seem to be living in the world of “fashion” rather than “style,” often choosing outfits straight off the runway or trending feeds. Social media bombards us with a ceaseless stream of trends, making it all too easy to swap our individuality for the latest craze. This trend-chasing has led many to lose sight of their own tastes, opting instead for conformity. While wanting to fit in is human, it shouldn’t come at the cost of losing your personal style. Developing a true sense of style is an ongoing journey that requires self-reflection and sincerity. Taking already curated pieces off the runway is not a solution.

One major culprit in this style dilemma is the Fear of Missing Out (FOMO). Social media is engineered to make you feel like you need to jump on every new trend or risk falling behind. This pressure can overshadow what truly makes you feel confident and comfortable. It’s essential to remember that opting out of a trend isn’t a fashion faux pas; it’s a step toward embracing your own distinctive style. Style is about standing out in your own way, not just keeping up with the crowd.

Influencers play a significant role in shaping trends, but they also face immense pressure to stay ahead of the curve. The constant need to showcase the latest styles can sometimes force them to abandon their distinctiveness. This reality is a reminder that even those setting trends are navigating the pressure to conform. The influencers who make the biggest impact are those who manage to stay true to their personal style while still engaging with current trends. They prove that real style is about expressing who you are, not just what’s popular.

So, how do you navigate this sea of trends to find your personal style? Start by embracing consistency and self-awareness. Think of your wardrobe as a collection of pieces that represent you, rather than a series of trend-based purchases. Experiment with different looks and pay attention to what makes you feel your best. Over time, you’ll start to see a pattern that reflects your true style.

Setting boundaries is also crucial. Not every trend will suit everyone, and that’s okay. Just because a style works for someone else doesn’t mean it’s right for you. For example, while Burna Boy’s bold stage outfits are striking, they might not be the best choice for everyday wear. Knowing your limits and staying true to your preferences will help you avoid fashion pitfalls. If you’re unsure about a new look, consult a friend with a keen sense of style who can offer honest feedback. Remember, experimenting is fun, but it should be within the limits of what feels genuine to you and your budget.
