Keazor‘s ‘Ki’mon!’ Recounts the Vibrancy of Nigeria’s Afro-Funk Scene

The Lagos premiere of Ki’mon! The Eastern Nigerian Afro-Funk Revolution (1970-1980) took place at Alliance Francais in Ikoyi, organized by The African Music Library (AML) in collaboration with Josplay Music, Pigl Africa, Nigerian Funk, and Sample Chief.

Directed by Nze Ed Emeka Keazor, the documentary offers a deep dive into a distinctive musical movement, amplifying the voices of the pioneers who shaped Eastern Nigeria’s Afro-funk scene.

The premiere, following screenings in Enugu and London, explores the historical and cultural context that birthed this genre, with Ed Keazor directing, and production by him and Afro-Funk drummer Eddie Offeyi, alongside executive producers Muni King-Keazor, Obi Asika, and Ed Keazor.

While the contributions of past music heroes often go overlooked, Ki’mon! not only recounts history but also celebrates the pivotal figures in Eastern Nigeria’s Afro-Funk scene, shedding light on the cultural complexities of post-Biafra Nigeria. It shatters the myth of a desolate post-war region, showing the Afro-Funk rockers who exposed the vibrance of youth culture emerging out of the region at the time.

The premiere event included a stimulating discussion with Nze Keazor, Obi Asika, Benson Idonije, Odion Iruoje, and others, alongside a performance by the Lagos Afro-Funk Collective.

Additionally, Lifetime Achievement Awards were bestowed upon Nigerian music industry legends in recognition of their significant contributions.
