From Nollywood Dramas to Global Epics

Movies for the month of September.

You thought August was fire, well September promises to be a well-packed month with loads of movie varieties. Epics are still holding the scene, as old Nollywood resurfaces, but let’s not leave out childhood toys becoming cinematic experiences for your delight. Here are the exciting movies and series to note this September:

 

NOLLYWOOD MOVIES

 

Last Year Single

 

Produced by Nigerian filmmaker Omoni Oboli, Last Year Single is based on three single ladies all in their 30s and the drama of finding suitable spouses. It stars Bimbo Ademoye, Toni Tones, Mawuli Gavor, Kachi Nnochere, Tony Monjaro, Taye Arimoro and Chy Nwakanma.

The 2020 drama series will commence Netflix streaming on the 6th of September.

 

Ajaga

 

A faith-based movie that takes a curious look beneath the surface of modern-day church leadership, revealing a web of manipulation, abuse and exploitation. It stars Femi Jacobs, Adenike Odubawo, Tope Olowoniyan, Carol King, Jaiye Kuti and Tomiwa Sage. Ajaga will debut across cinemas on September 6.

 

 

When Love Strikes 


Co-written by Chinaza Onuzo and Joy Bewaji, the heartwarming football-themed movie follows the journey of a young footballer named IBK. It highlights his triumphs, setbacks, and complex relationships that shape the pinnacle of his career.

 

The film offers an intimate glimpse into the personal and professional challenges footballers and their families face while celebrating the vibrant and fast-paced world of Nigerian football. Produced by Eku Edewor, the cast list includes Bimbo Akintola, Zubby Michael, Sunshine Rosman, Jimmie Akinsola, Vine Olugu and Chuks Joseph.


When Love Strikes
will debut on September 13, across cinemas nationwide.

 

 

Lisabi: The Uprising

 

The story is set in the 18th-century Oyo Empire spotlighting an Egba farmer, who ignited a rebellion against the oppressive Oyo Empire. He leveraged the collective power of his fellow farmers and enigmatic abilities. His defiance, culminated in the defeat of over 6,000 Oyo soldiers and secured independence after centuries of subjugation.

 

Directed by Niyi Akinmolayan, the movie features Lateef Adedimeji, Liquorose, Mo Bimpe, Mr Macaroni, Olayode Juliana, Femi Adebayo Salami, Odunlade Adekola and Gabriel Afolayan. The Netflix original, Lisabi: The Uprising will commence streaming on Netflix on September 27.

 

 

Farmers Bride

 

Written by Jack’enneth Opukeme, set in 1980 Ibadan, the story revolves around the character Odun, portrayed by Femi Branch. The wealthy and lonely farmer with no surviving family decides to marry a young bride, Funmi (Ejeye), from the village. But Funmi resents her husband in this union arranged by her mother Tundun, as she fails to help soothe Odun’s ageing nerves.

Directed by Adebayo Tijani and Opukeme, the feature-length also stars Tobi Bakre, Mercy Aigbe, Efe Irele and Wumi Toriola. The original by Film One Studios,will debut across cinemas nationwide on September 27, 2024.

 

 

Queen Lateefah

 

In the city of Lagos, a young lady hurdles both sides of society as she tries to make a name for herself. The feature-length promises drama, comedy and romance as it seeks to address the make-believe lifestyle.

 

The movie stars Kunle Remi, Fathia Williams, Elvina Ibru, Femi Adebayo, Nancy Isime, Salami Rotimi and Kie Kie. Produced by Wumi Toriola and directed by Captain Degzy Queen Lateefah will debut across cinema nationwide on September 27.

 

 

INTERNATIONAL MOVIES/SERIES

 

The American Society of Magical Negros

 

The American Society of Magical Negroes is a 2024 American comedy film that satires the Magical Negro trope featuring a young man who joins a clandestine group of magical African Americans committed to enhancing the lives of white individuals.

 

After a successful cinematic run at the American box office, the movie will commence streaming on Prime Video.

 

 

The Perfect Couple

 

The upcoming American mystery drama series stars Nicole Kidman, Liev Schreiber, Dakota Fanning, and Eve Hewson. It is an adaptation of the 2018 novel of the same name by Elin Hilderbrand, scheduled to premiere on September 5, 2024, on Netflix. Amelia (Hewson) is about to marry into the wealthy Nantucket Winbury family, to the disapproval of their matriarch novelist (Kidman). A body is found on the beach and secrets are revealed, everyone becomes a suspect.

 

 

The Forge

 

Two weeks after its debut in the American cinemas, The Forge makes its way to the Nigerian cinemas on September 6. The 2024 American Christian drama film is directed by Alex Kendrick and co-written by Stephen Kendrick. It serves as a spin-off to War Room and marks the Kendrick brothers’ ninth film, and the sixth produced through their company, Kendrick Brothers Productions.

The film features a cast that includes Cameron Arnett, Priscilla Shirer, Aspen Kennedy, Karen Abercrombie, T.C. Stallings, BJ Arnett, Ken Bevel, Benjamin Watson, Jonathan Evans, Jerry Shirer, and Tommy Woodard.

 

 

Law, Love and Betrayal

 

Showmax’s latest original, Law, Love, and Betrayal, centers on a determined township lawyer  in Sandton. The 13-episode legal drama premieres this month, with new episodes dropping every Thursday.

 

 

Piano Love


This film, produced by Black Brain Pictures and directed by Mandla Ngcongwane, is a passion project that beautifully captures the essence of South African music and dance culture. 
It follows the story of a romance that blossoms amidst the triumphs and heartaches of Soweto’s vibrant streets, starring Kwesta and Bontle Modiselle-Moloi as the lovestruck couple. 

Piano Love will premiere on Netflix on the 6th of September 2024.

 

 

Rebel Ridge


The upcoming American action thriller film written, produced, directed and edited by Jeremy Saulnier. The film stars Aaron Pierre, Don Johnson, AnnaSophia Robb, David Denman, Emory Cohen, Steve Zissis, Zsane Jhe, Dana Lee, and James Cromwell.
Rebel Ridge is scheduled to be released by Netflix on September 6, 2024.

 

 

Emily In Paris (Season 4 – Part2)

 

It seems like Emily’s story isn’t over as it makes it return yet again to Netflix on September 12. So this time Emily takes a trip to Rome that expands her hurdles with work and finding a romantic interest.

 

 

Uglies

 

In a futuristic dystopia with enforced beauty standards, a teen awaiting mandatory cosmetic surgery embarks on a journey to find her missing friend. Starring: Joey King, Keith Powers, Laverne Cox. Come September 13, Uglies commences streaming on Netflix.

 

Dungeon and Dragons: Honour Among Thieves

 

The 2023 fantasy heist film is back! A charismatic thief and a group of unlikely adventurers set off on a thrilling quest to recover a long-lost relic. But their exciting journey turns perilous when they encounter the wrong foes. Starring Chris Pine, Hugh Grant, Michelle Rodriguez, Regé-Jean Page, and Justice Smith, Dungeon and Dragons arrives to Netflix.

 

 

Blood Legacy

 

After years of estrangement, Khanyi Adesina returns home to fight for her family’s business empire as it threatens to collapse. Starring: Xolile Tshabalala, Buyile Mdladla, Mike Ndlangamandla

Blood Legacy will commence streaming on September 20 via Nteflix.

 

 

Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Mondelez Story

 

True crime aficionados, there’s something new for you. From the creators of Dahmer comes The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story, the second installment in Ryan Murphy’s true crime anthology series, Monsters. This season delves into the 1996 conviction of the Menendez brothers for the murder of their parents.

 

 

The Penguin (S1)


The Penguin
crime drama limited series based on the DC Comics character Penguin. Starring Colin Farrell, Cristin Milioti, Rhenzy Feliz, Michael Kelly, and Shohreh Aghdashloo. The Batman spin off makes its way to Showmax this month.

 

 

Transformer One 

 

Come September 20, at cinemas near you, Transformers One makes a return. The upcoming American animated science fiction action film based on Hasbro’s Transformers toy line. Directed by Josh Cooley from a screenplay by Eric Pearson and the writing duo of Andrew Barrer and Gabriel Ferrari. The film depicts the early relationship of Optimus Prime and Megatron and how they forever changed the fate of Cybertron.

 


Killer Heat

 

Killer Heat is an upcoming American crime mystery drama film directed by Philippe Lacôte and produced by Brad Weston, the film is based on Jo Nesbø’s short story “The Jealousy Man”. Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Shailene Woodley, and Richard Madden are set to star.

 

Killer Heat will be released on September 26, 2024, by Amazon MGM Studios.

 

 

The Wild Robot


The upcoming American animated epic science fiction is based on the book series of the same name by Peter Brown.  The film was written and directed by Chris Sanders and produced by Jeff Hermann. It stars Lupita Nyong’o, Pedro Pascal, Kit Connor, Bill Nighy, Stephanie Hsu, Mark Hamill, and Catherine O’Hara.
The Wild Robot debut at cinemas nationwide on September 27.
