The Pick: Victony Meets Terry G on “Tanko”

Since Victony’s debut, he has shown a clear intent to expand his range within Afrobeats. His collaborations have often been deliberate, pairing him with artists who can bring out different sides of his sound. “Tanko,” featuring Terry G, is one of those records. A house-driven club track, “Tanko” takes its title from a street football slang for the humiliating nutmeg; here, it’s a stand-in for the come-up, the fake-out, the flex you don’t see coming until you’re on your back. It serves as a metaphor for confidence and ambition. It is also a nod to the calculated risks Victony has taken in his career so far. Having weathered more than a few whiplashes, Victony now frames survival as an unequivocal first principle from which he asserts presence, agency, and continuity. From the opening bars, his delivery is full of chest-thumping pride, “Fuck what they talkin’ about / Somebody say ”Stubborn”, I activate.

Victony and Terry G, despite their vastly different sonic styles, form a compelling and effective musical pairing. Terry G built his name on volatility. His legend has loomed large over Nigerian music. The “Free Madness” era was a rush of jagged percussion, sudden vocal swerves, and the sense that a track could fly off the rails at any moment. Victony’s instincts are different with smooth melodies, careful delivery, and structures that keep their shape. On “Tanko,” they meet halfway. Terry G reins in just enough to fit the track’s taut, house-driven frame, but still colours the edges with his signature mania. The result is a sound that retains the wild, psychedelic whir of Terry G’s influence while serving Victony’s more tactical, incendiary purpose.

Afrobeats has always pulled from itself and “Tanko” reaffirms Terry G as a legacy figure one, whose chaotic fingerprints are still smudged across the fabric of the genre.
