Lagos Liga: Everything You Need to Know About Nigeria’s Latest Football Revolution

The persistent challenges rocking Nigerian football pose significant obstacles for privately-owned leagues to thrive, but Lagos Liga seems poised to mark a turning point.

In a time when Nigerian football leagues and tournaments struggle to captivate local interest, Lagos Liga is set to change the narrative by harnessing the country’s unique industries to rekindle the excitement for domestic football.

Football has historically united Nigerians across various backgrounds, but interest in the local leagues — the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL), Nigeria National League (NNL), and Nationwide League One (NLO) — has waned. Despite support from the government, the Nigerian Football Federation (NFF), and some private investment, these leagues face limited followership, mainly due to administrative inefficiencies and other persistent issues.

These persistent challenges pose a significant challenge for privately owned leagues to thrive, but Lagos Liga’s ambitious model seems poised to mark a turning point in Nigerian football.

What is Lagos Liga

Lagos Liga is a private 7-a-side football league featuring non-professional and former footballers from around the world. The inaugural edition of the competition will parade 16 clubs, each with 12 registered players, competing for the grand prize of N50 million.

The first season is scheduled to run from December 6 to December 22, with a concluding Awards and Dinner night slated for December 30, 2024.

Lagos Liga’s Format

The 16 clubs will be divided into four groups of four teams. Each match will follow a 7-a-side setup, comprising six outfield players, a goalkeeper, and five substitutes. The top two teams from each group will advance to the quarterfinals, followed by the semi-finals and the final.

Each stage of the tournament will follow standard football rules, with one unique twist: during the group stage, a penalty shootout will take place regardless of the match result. The winner of the shootout will earn an additional point, allowing for scenarios where the regulation time winner can earn four points, the losing team can get one, or in the case of a draw, a 2-to-1 point split.

Lagos Liga Prize Structure

The ultimate winner will play six matches, earning approximately N8.33 million per game — the highest per-match prize at any level of Nigerian football.

Viewership, Streaming, and Betting Options

All Lagos Liga matches will be held at two designated venues in Lagos (to be announced). Fans who can’t attend in person will be able to stream matches, though Lagos Liga will not be available for wager on betting platforms.

Organisers and Structure

Lagos Liga is organised by a diverse team from Nigeria, the United States, and Switzerland, though specific details on the organisers are limited.

Player Benefits

Beyond the N50 million prize, each registered player will receive a designated registration allowance disbursed through their clubs. The league will culminate in an exclusive Partners & Champions Awards Dinner on December 30, 2024, celebrating achievements like best supporters group, MVP, and top scorer. Plans for Lagos Liga 2025 will also be announced during this event.

What’s Next for Lagos Liga?

Following the inaugural season, Lagos Liga 2025 is projected to begin in March or April, with prize money for finalists and registered players expected to exceed N100 million. Additional competitions, including cup tournaments and corporate games, are already in development for the coming year.
