While the enthusiasm over a 21-track album from Young Jonn wasn’t exactly one of Afrobeats’ big expectations of the year — made no better by a conscious week postponement over Nigeria’s recent insecurity issues — the producer-turned-artist effectively marked a clearer expression of his artistry with the release of his sophomore album Blue Disco. This follows 19 months after his full-fledged declaration of his artist identity with the debut album Jiggy Forever.
If there is anything that makes Blue Disco more than expected, it is its star-studded feature list that parades cultural heavyweights like Wizkid, Olamide, Rema, Shenseea, and Franglish, with the run reaching a climax on the Asake and Focalistic-assisted “2Factor”. Produced by Echo, “2Factor’’ is a groovy track that finds Young Jonn laying the hooks and maintaining his presence as long-term collaborator Asake glides with his signature vocal bounce and street edge. Their South African brother, Focalistic, understands the slow rhythm and mid-tempo, complementing what sums up a track built to ignite body movement and cheers from a crowd.
Beyond the groove, the track extends Young Jonn’s flair for feel-good music driven by celebration, movement, and communal energy, reaffirming one of the unspoken ethos that has guided his evolution from producer to artist.
