Africa will have a record nine representatives in the Round of 32 at the 2026 FIFA World Cup after an unprecedented group stage campaign that saw 90 per cent of the continent’s teams progress to the knockout rounds.

Of the 10 African sides that made it to the 23rd edition of the tournament, only Tunisia failed to advance, having finished bottom of Group F after three defeats. Every other African nation booked a place in the last 32, making Africa the best-performing confederation at the tournament in terms of qualification rate. South America’s CONMEBOL followed with five of its six teams progressing, an 83.3 per cent success rate, while UEFA sent 13 of its 16 representatives through, equivalent to 81.25 per cent. Host continent, CONCACAF advanced three of its six teams, while Asia fared even worse, with just two of nine teams making it out.

Sunday morning’s final group stage matches completed Africa’s historic haul. completed Africa’s historic haul, after DR Congo secured a dramatic 3-1 comeback victory over Uzbekistan to finish third in Group K and qualify as one of the best third-placed teams, setting up a Round of 32 meeting with England. Algeria also booked their place after an eventful 3-3 draw against Austria, a result that was enough to see them finish third in Group I and progress to face Belgium.

Those results added to the seven African teams that had already confirmed their places earlier in the week. South Africa finished second in Group A to reach the World Cup knockout stage for the first time in the nation’s history and will face Canada. Morocco claimed second place in Group C behind Brazil and will meet the Netherlands, while Côte d’Ivoire finished second in Group E to earn a tie against Norway.

Egypt also finished runners-up in Group G and will take on Australia, while Cape Verde continued a dream debut World Cup campaign by securing second place in Group H to reach the knockout stage for the first time. Senegal advanced from Group I as one of the best third-placed teams and will also face Belgium, while Ghana completed Africa’s historic contingent by finishing third in Group L to book a clash with Colombia.

The achievement marks a remarkable turnaround for African football. Before this tournament, no more than two African nations had reached the knockout stage in the same World Cup edition. Now, nine teams remain in contention as the continent chases another deep run after Morocco’s historic semi-final appearance four years ago.
