Jay-Z Set to Make History as He Picks Himself to Headline the Super Bowl Halftime Show

After controversies surrounding the picks for the Apple Music Halftime Show, legendary rapper Jay-Z picks himself to headline the 2027 Apple Music Super Bowl Halftime Show at SoFi Stadium.

The announcement video released yesterday, shows the rapper seated at SoFi Stadium in Inglewood, California, surrounded by goats. Captioned “GOAT’s out of the bag,” the post plays on the phrase “greatest of all time,” a nod to Jay-Z’s legacy in hip-hop. The performance is scheduled for 14 February 2027, during Super Bowl LXI, and will mark his first appearance as a halftime show headliner.

The announcement comes after he completed his “Jay-Z 30” concert run, which ended at SoFi Stadium over the weekend, the same stadium where he will perform during one of the biggest sporting events in the world.

Jay-Z has won 25 Grammy Awards, making him one of the most decorated artists in hip-hop. In 2017, he became the first rapper inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame, before joining the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 2021.

His upcoming performance at Super Bowl LXI could add another milestone to a career defined by records and cultural influence. Previous halftime shows featuring Kendrick Lamar and Bad Bunny have drawn record-breaking audiences, raising expectations for Jay-Z’s performance. When he takes the stage on 14 February 2027, it could mark another significant moment for hip-hop on one of the world’s biggest entertainment platforms.

Over the past three decades, the 56-year-old rapper has built an influence that extends far beyond the United States. From his early success in New York to his position as a global music and business figure, Jay-Z has helped shape hip-hop’s sound, business model and cultural reach. His catalogue includes influential albums such as Reasonable Doubt, The Blueprint and The Black Album, alongside hits such as “99 Problems,” “Empire State of Mind” and “Run This Town.” His work has helped establish hip-hop as a dominant force in global popular culture.

Beyond his music, Jay Z has played a major role in shaping the industry through Roc Nation, the entertainment company he founded in 2008. The company has managed and represented artists across music and sports, while also expanding into talent management, touring and live entertainment. Through its work with artists such as Rihanna, J. Cole and Megan Thee Stallion, Roc Nation has helped develop careers and bring hip-hop and contemporary music to wider audiences.

Jay Z’s influence on sports entertainment has also grown through Roc Nation’s partnership with the National Football League (NFL). Now in its seventh year, the partnership has helped shape the league’s entertainment strategy, including the Super Bowl Halftime show,

When the NFL first reached an agreement with Roc Nation, Commissioner Roger Goodell said he had one request: that Jay Z eventually perform at the halftime show himself, whenever he felt the time was right.

Seven years later, that moment is set to arrive. With an extensive catalogue spanning more than three decades, Jay-Z has plenty of material to draw from for the performance. Speculation about possible guest appearances is also likely to build as the event approaches, with Justin Bieber among the names rumoured to appear. However, no guest performers have been officially confirmed.

The Super Bowl LXI is scheduled for 14 February 2027. The event will be broadcast on ESPN and ABC and streamed on Disney+.
