Nigeria has seen their journey in the 2023 FIFA World Cup has concluded following a penalty shootout loss to England at the Suncorp Stadium in Brisbane.

In front of a roaring crowd of thousands, the Falcons of Nigeria exhibited their resilience for a full 120 minutes, only to falter in the crucial penalty shootout.

Randy Waldrum stuck with the same lineup that secured Nigeria’s victory against Australia, opting to keep Asisat Oshoala on the bench. Uchenna Kanu, Ify Onumonu, and Rasheedat Ajibade spearheaded the attacking force.

As the clock ticked down to halftime, there was no clear advantage for either team. The Super Falcons came alive in the second half, with the introduction of Oshoala providing a boost.

Nigeria’s prospects brightened considerably when England’s standout player, Lauren James, was handed a red card for a reckless challenge.

Despite having a numerical advantage, Nigeria struggled to capitalize on it throughout regulation time and even during the extended play.

However, the former African champions’ fortune took a turn for the worse during the penalty shootout, with Desire Oparanozie and Michelle Alozie missing the team’s initial two kicks.

Ajibade and Christy Ucheibe managed to convert from the penalty spot, but England showcased their composure by successfully converting four of their kicks, securing a place in the tournament’s quarterfinals.

The Super Falcons’ quest for a spot in the Women’s World Cup‘s last eight has been elusive for 14 years, with their most recent appearance dating back to 1999.
