Kah-Lo’s ‘Pain/Pleasure’ is a Confident Debut

Nigerian music sensation, Kah-Lo, awakens for her debut album, Pain/Pleasure. This release follows a string of hit singles including jams like “Runaway,” “GD Woman,” “Karma,” and “fund$.”

On this album, Kah-Lo dives into her own world, dishing out a sonic autobiography that swings between moments of fiery bitterness and self-assuredness like on “GD Woman” where she confirms, “
Party don’t start till I roll.”

Comprising fourteen distinct tracks, Pain/Pleasure handles diverse themes. Tracks like “Unbothered” and the title track, “Pain/Pleasure” dissect toxic relationships, while “My Name” brings the boss energy. Kah-Lo’s blend of sassy, assertive delivery and authentic storytelling strikes a coherent balance within the album.

This project is Kah-Lo’s diary of ups and downs. She isn’t holding back. Pain/Pleasure tells a story of redemption, where Kah-Lo goes toe-to-toe with her past foes, all in pursuit of that sweet satisfaction. She boldly confesses on “Karma”, “It’s not pretty when I’m mad…to make you cry would make me glad.” It’s like her personal empowerment anthem, packed with self-esteem boosts and assertive vibes. Her lyrics ooze self-love and female empowerment, perfectly complemented by groovy production.

Drawing from Afrobeats, R&B, house, and dance-pop beats, Kah-Lo flexes her sonic muscles throughout the album. With her genre-defying approach, Kah-Lo boldly positions herself as a vanguard, representing the emergence of a new wave of African electronic artists.

In its entirety, Pain/Pleasure portrays Kah-Lo’s grit. It peels back layers, showing her tough exterior and her softer side. While Kah-Lo’s tunes are known for starting parties, this album reveals her soulful, artistic depth. It’s her way of saying, “I’m here, and I’ve got more to share.”
