iPhone 16’s Camera Control Button is the Mobile Feature to Beat

Unlike the Action Button in the iPhone 15 series, the iPhone 16’s Camera Control isn’t exactly a button; it’s a touch-capacitive area area that enables a range of advanced functions.

Though nothing stays the same, it’s clear the rivalry between Samsung and Apple in the mobile space will only intensify, especially now that Google Pixel is also in the mix. These consumer electronics giants often push the envelope with innovative features, though some releases focus more on aesthetics than functionality. However, Apple’s latest iPhone 16 series, launched on Monday, introduces a new Camera Control button that’s arguably the most distinct feature of this model.

As mentioned in our last report on the iPhone 16 launch, this camera-linked feature combines ease of use, resourcefulness, and cutting-edge technology that makes it stand out. The Camera Control is more than just a shortcut to open the camera app; it also enhances navigation and unlocks several other capabilities, which we’ll explore below.

What You Need to Know About the Camera Control

Unlike the Action Button from the iPhone 15 series, the Camera Control on the iPhone 16 models isn’t totally a button. Instead, it’s a touch-capacitive area on the side of the device that uses haptic motors and pressure-sensitive sensors to mimic the tactile feedback of a real button press.

At first glance, you might mistake it for a button due to how well the combination of sensors and haptic feedback creates the sensation of movement, much like the technology used in the MacBook’s Force Touch touchpad.

Beyond this, the Camera Control feature makes accessing camera tools straightforward. A short press launches the camera app, a second press snaps a photo, and holding the button starts recording a video.

Users can also use the Camera Control for more detailed camera adjustments by swiping. Exposure, depth of field, and zoom can all be modified through this feature, offering seamless control over camera settings.

AI Integration and More

The Camera Control is designed with artificial intelligence (AI) in mind for enhanced functionality. By pressing and holding the Camera Control and pointing it at an object like a PC, TV, or even a restaurant sign, the AI can pull up relevant information.

Apple says additional AI-related features, including real-time conversations with ChatGPT by simply pointing the camera, will be rolled out later this year. These features will work alongside a two-stage shutter that lets users lock focus and exposure with a light press.

Despite some features not being available immediately, the Camera Control already promises to be a game-changing addition that offers intuitive functionality even without the full AI rollout. Its only learning curve lies in determining the right pressure to apply for different tasks.
