Spotify Gives With New Offline Backup Playlist but Takes With Price Hike

Spotify’s got a new trick up its sleeve: the Offline Backup Playlist, arriving just as Premium plans got pricier. Worth it? You decide.

Like recent updates from Netflix and Starlink, renowned audio streaming platform, Spotify, is implementing substantial price hikes for its Nigerian subscribers.

Under the new pricing structure, Spotify Premium subscriptions have risen from N900 to N1300 for Individual plans, N450 to N650 for Students plan, N1200 to N1700 for Duo users, and N1400 to N2000 for the Family plan.

In an email sent to premium subscribers, Spotify explained that the price adjustments, which will take effect on each user’s next billing date, are intended to support continued innovation and deliver enhanced features.

However, it’s not all bad news. Spotify also introduced a new feature exclusively for premium users: the Offline Backup Playlist. This feature automatically updates based on your recent listening history, allowing you to access previously streamed tracks even when offline.

While premium users have long enjoyed the ability to download songs for offline listening, the Offline Backup Playlist takes this convenience to the next level — it leverages your device’s local cache to store recently played songs along with tracks from your listening queue.

Additionally, the Offline Backup Playlist evolves alongside your listening habits. Although it isn’t personalised, it can be filtered by artist, mood, or genre, making it easy to navigate.

If you haven’t been paying attention, you probably haven’t noticed, but the Offline Backup feature appears on your homepage when offline, provided you’ve enabled offline listening and recently streamed at least five songs.

If it isn’t appearing, ensure your Spotify app is updated and head to Settings and Privacy > Data Saving and Offline > Offline Access. Once enabled, your playlist will automatically refresh, keeping you connected to your favourite music—even without an internet connection.
