Emmy-Nominated Orji to Adapt Gyasi's ’Transcendent Kingdom’ for Sony Pictures Television

Sony Pictures Television has secured the rights to adapt Yaa Gyasi’s book, Transcendent Kingdom, into a television series, with Nigerian-American actress, Yvonne Orji, leading the development charge.

Orji, known for her role as Molly on HBO’s Insecure, is a perfect fit for the project. Not only is she a talented actress, but her Nigerian-American background aligns with the story’s themes of immigration and cultural identity.

Transcendent Kingdom follows Gifty, a neuroscientist grappling with the mental health struggles that have plagued her Ghanaian immigrant family. The narrative weaves between Gifty’s research and her childhood in Alabama, exploring faith, science, and the complexities of family.

Yvonne Orji signed a two-year, first-look deal with Sony Pictures Television. Under the deal, she will develop scripted drama and comedy series for streaming and cable.

This adaptation represents a major step forward in showcasing African perspectives on television.  Yvonne Orji’s role as producer brings a level of authenticity crucial to capturing the essence of Gyasi’s work. Her involvement ensures the story reaches a broader audience, bringing the powerful themes to life for a wider range of viewers.
