In an official statement, they cited “unforeseen circumstances” as the reason for the rescheduling and apologized for any inconvenience caused. They emphasized their commitment to delivering an exceptional experience, promising an unforgettable evening of music, glamour, and excitement on the new date.

The Headies Awards, a significant event in the Nigerian music industry, celebrates outstanding achievements in Afrobeats and other music genres. The annual ceremony attracts numerous viewers and top-tier artists, making it a highlight on the entertainment calendar.

Despite the postponement, the organizers assure fans and participants that the event will maintain its standard of excellence. They encourage everyone to adjust their plans accordingly and look forward to celebrating the music scene on the new date.

This year’s Headies carried additional weight as it marked the return of the awards to Lagos, Nigeria, after two years in the United States. The shift back to its home country fueled discussions about the event’s identity, with many industry figures and fans believing that its relocation to the U.S. diluted its connection to the core of African music. Themed “Back to Base,” the 2025 edition aimed to reestablish its deep roots within the Nigerian music scene.

Ahead of the event, Rema had emerged as the most nominated artist, securing nine nods, including Album of the Year and Artist of the Year. His impact as a producer and video director was also recognized. Ayra Starr followed closely with eight nominations, earning recognition for Best Recording of the Year, Best R&B Single, and Best Female Vocal Performance for her hit, Last Heartbreak Song. Odumodublvck secured five nominations, including Best Rap Single for “Blood on the Dance Floor” and “Best Collaboration” for his work with Shallipopi on “Cast.”

The Headies also introduced two new categories: Soundtrack of the Year, honoring original music composed for films or series, and Best Performer Live, recognizing the most outstanding live performance released in an official capacity. This decision reflected the growing recognition of Afrobeats’ role in global entertainment and the need to highlight the artistry behind performances beyond studio recordings.
