Netflix’s latest release, Supacell, has taken the streaming world by storm in just a short time, since its release on June 27, 2024. Directed by visionary filmmaker Rapman, the action-packed thriller has quickly climbed the ranks to become one of the most talked-about movies of the season. It received a 100% score on Rotten Tomatoes, which further cements its status as an outstanding series for everyone.

The story surrounds the life of five distinct people in South London who suddenly develop superpowers, and the only apparent connection between them at first is that they are all Black. As they deal with the impact of their powers on their daily lives, one man Michael Lasaki (played by British/Nigerian actor Tosin Cole) tries to bring the dots together and soon realizes that their newfound abilities were because at least one of their parents had the sickle cell gene. With little time to grasp the full extent of their situation, they and their loved ones find themselves under attack by a group intent on weaponizing their powers.

The cast of Supacell includes Nadine Mills, DJ Cuppy, Eric Kofi Abrefa, Calvin Demba, Josh Tedeku, Adelayo Adedayo, Rayxia Ojo, Sharleen, Giacomo Mancini and Eddie Marsan.

Since its arrival on Netflix, Supacell has quickly climbed the streamer’s global Top 10 chart for English-language TV shows. During the week of June 24 through June 30, the series secured the #2 spot with 33.5 million views and 6.4 million hours watched, surpassing established hits like previous seasons of Bridgerton, Sweet Tooth, and Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story.

Its realistic form of story telling is one of the things viewers find themselves drawn to. It takes a step further by not just entertaining but addressing key themes like friendship, trust, having a strong community, power dynamics, gender based violence and struggles of people with Sickle Cell disease.

One thing Supacell will do to you is leave you wanting more immediately. With only one season, fans are going to be demanding a second season in no time. So grab yourself a drink, some snacks and have yourself a good watch.
