The Detty Decembounce Guide: How To Survive in Lagos

Keep your wallet tight, heart locked, and instincts sharp. The “Detty December” scene isn’t for the faint-hearted.

First things first: you have to stay sharp. In Lagos, everyone’s working an angle, so keep your wits about you. People here are on the move, and plenty will gladly lighten your wallet if you let them. Speaking of wallets, double your budget now. Whatever you planned, trust me, it won’t cut it. Lagos is pricey, and in December, prices shoot even higher. From club cover charges to street touts ‘helping you’ park your cars, everything comes with an extra layer of ‘Detty December tax.’ Prepare to pay more than expected, and if you think you can keep converting prices to naira and calling it cheap, think again—that’ll dry up your cash flow fast.

When it comes to love, leave your heart at the airport. Lagos in December isn’t the place for soulmates. The city hits relationship shuffle mode, with last year’s flings back on the market for round two and nobody in a hurry to settle down. Keep things light and fun, but guard your feelings. The phrase ‘Detty December boo’ might sound nice, but most people are casting wide nets. Keep it casual and focus on enjoying yourself, not building something serious.

Considering a hookup? Tread very carefully. The odds of meeting people with hidden motives are high— could be  a player or someone living a double life. Make friends, network, and focus on the thrill, but don’t put yourself in any risky situation. Go out, sip your cocktails, but keep a clear head. Letting loose is fun, but losing control is risky in a city this fast-paced. If someone’s telling you everything you want to hear, remember they may have a different script for someone else.

Practical advice: be very smart with your belongings. Leave the expensive watches and flashy gadgets at home. Lagos is an active city, and opportunists have a sixth sense for spotting IJGBs. Stick to reliable transport options, use ride-hailing apps for security, and avoid wandering off alone at night. Plan your locations out in advance, and always know your exits. And while out, be very aware of your drink—keep it with you, and don’t accept any that’s already been opened. A night out should be fun, but safety has to come first.

When it comes to making connections, focus on networking. Lagos has some of the best events in December, with people coming from everywhere. Use this time to build contacts, meet people, and make memories. But be wise with your words—don’t overshare with strangers or let too much information slip. Enjoy the nightlife, soak up the culture, and make friends, but always keep something to yourself.

Most importantly, stick to your own rules. Before you even land, know what you’re okay with and what you won’t tolerate. Lagos is exciting, and it’s easy to get swept up in the thrill of it all, but your boundaries will keep you grounded. Decide what’s worth your time, money, and energy, and don’t let anything pull you off track.
