One of Nigeria’s sharpest melody makers, Mayorkun spent much of the late 2010s building a catalogue of clean, sugar-rush Afropop bangers without ever really breaking a sweat. His meteoric rise — from 2016’s viral cover of Davido’s “The Money” to his 2018 debut The Mayor of Lagos (headed to platinum) — was punctuated by a rip in his momentum post-2021’s Back in Office. But after the relatively quiet spell, a self-imposed hiatus of sorts, with his latest album, Still The Mayor, he reanchors himself at the center of the Afropop constellation. This is a return signaled emphatically by the jubilant cut, “Blessings on Blessings (B.O.B)” featuring none other than Davido.

The track is, in essence, a party. Davido and Mayorkun have always been one of Afrobeats’ most effective pairings. Their chemistry is natural, lived-in. Mayorkun owes much of his early career to Davido, who signed him to his DMW imprint nearly a decade ago. So when they link up on wax now, it’s a reunion of master and student, both of whom are now proven kings in their own right toasting to the roads they’ve walked, together and apart. Over a bed of the now-ubiquitous log drums and a shimmering Afrobeats production, Mayorkun’s hook does most of the work: “Bad days are gone / Good days are coming / Just follow who know road.” There’s an understanding here that for every big win, there was someone behind the scenes showing you the map. Davido, ever the ebullient hype man, slides onto the track with the infectious charisma he’s loved for. Little is left for either of them to prove, which makes the performance feel lighter, almost playful.

If Mayorkun’s earlier career was about proving he belonged, this moment is about reminding everyone. “’Cause I’m focused on my P / And I no fit retreat,” he says, steady as ever. The mayor’s back, readily picking up where he left off.
