The Pick

Show Dem Camp and The Cavemen have long occupied parallel creative universes. Both duos have mined the rich vein of Nigerian musical roots, creating soundscapes that resonate deeply with a generation. Show Dem Camp, with their hip-hop acumen have built a reputation as chroniclers of the Lagos experience. The Cavemen, on the other hand, have breathed new life into highlife, resurrecting it into a genre fit for the modern age. Thus, when the news broke of their joint album, No Love in Lagos, it felt like a cosmic alignment.

The album’s title, No Love in Lagos, suggests a certain coldness, a critique of the city’s fast-paced, often unforgiving nature. Yet the sound is anything but harsh. It’s a soulful, nostalgic trip through Lagos’ chaotic streets, softened by the warmth of Nsikak David’s guitars. It is a deep dive into Lagos’ dualities — its beauty and brutality, its love and lovelessness. This contrast between theme and sound is especially striking on “Blessings,” a standout track that finds Show Dem Camp’s rap halves, Tec and Ghost reflecting on their early days in the music industry. Over a bed of mellow, almost meditative instrumentation, they both unravel the complexities of their journey. Ghost’s verse is particularly resonant, as he ruminates on the aspirations and anxieties that come with their hard-earned success.

Moelogo has long been a critical figure in the UK’s Afrobeats and Afroswing scenes, but his work consistently taps into something more profound — a spiritual core that elevates his music beyond mere genre confines. With roots that stretch from the streets of Lagos to the boroughs of London, Moelogo’s music contains stripes of diasporic influence, threaded with the melodic and lyrical richness of his Yoruba heritage. In “Blessings,” his contribution is nothing short of excellent. His voice, both tender and commanding, serves as the track’s emotional anchor.
