But on his latest single “Way2Yung” — released more than a year after Are You Listening? — Taves sounds like he has left the heartbreak behind. There is no begging, no apologising; just an urge to dance, to enjoy life with his love interest, his friends, and hers too. But one thing remains constant: Taves’ infusion of the ‘80s synthpop that defined “Folake,” his biggest hit to date. From start to finish on “Way2Yung,” the synths run under his vocals, giving the song a warm, glowing feel that matches its celebration of youth.

Released as one of two singles under the W2Y banner, alongside “6 Ways,” “Way2Yung” smacks of the charm and magnetism that have come to define Taves’ artistry. Thanks to producer Arieenati’s slick, polished production, Taves effortlessly fuses R&B, Alté and Afropop into a track that feels fresh yet familiar. The percussion is light and easy on the ear, and the feel-good chorus is as irresistibly catchy as ever. “Pour small liquor and vibe titi early morning / ’Cause we’re way too young to be patient,” he sings. “Way2Yung” is sure to move heads and waists at house parties — exactly what Taves is counting on.
