“Essence” Obtains 4x RIAA Platinum Plaque

Wizkid’s hit track “Essence” from his album, Made In Lagos, has surpassed four million sales in the United States, earning it a platinum plaque from the RIAA.

Originally released in October 2020, the song, featuring Tems’ vocals, intrigued global audiences with its smooth Afrobeats sound.

Tems’ feature on “Essence” elevated her profile, propelling her to international acclaim in the music industry.

In 2021, the song received a major boost with the release of a remix featuring Justin Bieber.

The collaboration catapulted “Essence” into the Top 10 of the Billboard Hot 100, making it the first time an African song reached that level.

The song topped the Billboard Afrobeats chart for weeks, charted across countries like Canada, where it peaked at no. 30, Sweden, Netherlands, and the UK, where it peaked at no. 16 on the UK Singles chart and claimed the top spot on the UK Afrobeats Singles chart.

Its success extended beyond chart performance, earning accolades such as wins at the All Africa Music Awards and the African Entertainment Awards USA. The song also received recognition at the 2021 BET Awards, winning Collaboration of the Year, and garnered a nomination for Best Global Song Performance at the 64th Grammys.
