Nigeria’s U-17 women’s national team, the Flamingos, have secured a place in the quarter-finals of the 2026 FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup after recording a 2-1 victory over Mexico in their Round of 16 encounter on Thursday.
The Flamingos produced a composed performance at the Mohammed VI Football Complex in Salé, Morocco, with Oluebube Umejiaku and Mary Dunstan getting on the scoresheet to send the Flamingos into the last eight.
After a cagey opening period, Umejiaku broke the deadlock in the 40th minute, taking advantage of a defensive error by Mexico before driving into the penalty area and finishing past the goalkeeper.
Nigeria carried their advantage into the second half and extended it in the 71st minute through Dunstan, who reacted the quickest to a poorly cleared cross to put the Flamingos firmly in control of the contest.
Mexico attempted to force their way back into the game and eventually found a response through Emily Delgado deep into stoppage time. However, the late goal proved insufficient to deny Nigeria, who held on to secure progression.
Thursday’s result continues an encouraging turnaround for the Flamingos, who lost their opening Group B fixture 2-1 to Poland before responding with a 2-0 victory over Puerto Rico.
They then closed their group campaign with an impressive 3-1 win against defending champions DPR Korea, ending the Asian side’s 18-match unbeaten run in regulation time at the competition, a sequence stretching back to 2018.
Nigeria finished second in Group B with six points from three matches, scoring six goals and conceding four to advance to the knockout stages.
Mexico also entered the Round of 16 after finishing second in Group F with six points. They had recovered from a 2-0 opening defeat to Spain with victories over Chile and Australia, but could not find a way past Nigeria in Thursday’s encounter.
Venezuela Next for Flamingos
The Flamingos will face Venezuela in the quarter-finals on Sunday, November 1, with a place in the semi-finals at stake. Venezuela booked their place in the last eight after defeating Germany, the reigning European champions, in a notable upset.
The meeting presents Nigeria with an opportunity to reach the semi-finals for the second time in four years after the 2022 edition in India, where they went on to claim the bronze medal.
A victory on Sunday would take the Nigerian side another step closer to improving on that finish as they continue their pursuit of a first U-17 Women’s World Cup title.
