The Atlas Lions of Morocco have met their match at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, following a 2-0 defeat to France in the first quarterfinal match at the Boston Stadium in Massachusetts, USA. Morocco’s elimination from the tournament effectively wrapped up Africa’s World Cup campaign.

It was an encounter that held faint hopes of an upset for Morocco, particularly after the African giants held on against a ravaging French side for 45 minutes, aided in no small part by goalkeeper Yassine Bounou’s heroics. However, they would eventually be cracked open in the second half, with Kylian Mbappe breaking the deadlock on the hour mark before setting up compatriot Ousmane Dembele for what would be the winner.

The Frenchman had the opportunity to open the scoring for his eighth of the tournament in the 28th minute after Noussair  Mazraoui brought him down. However, his resulting penalty kick, which was, for some reason not yet clear, delayed for about two minutes, was saved by Bounou. The Al Hilal shot-stopper would ultimately prove to be the difference in the first half and carried that form into the second.

But on the hour mark, the inevitable Mbappe grabbed an overdue opener with a real beauty, finding a bit of room in the box before bending the ball around the already frustrated Diop and into the corner.

A few minutes later, Mbappe turned provider, laying the ball off for an onrushing Dembele, before staging a clever decoy run that attracted Morocco’s defenders and opened up a shooting opportunity for the Ballon d’Or holder to fire past Bounou.

Whatever late effort the Atlas Lions tried to muster at the other end of the pitch, Mike Maignan and company effectively dealt with, ensuring France head into Tuesday’s semi-final against the winner between Spain and Belgium with significant momentum. Morocco, on the other hand, head home with their heads held high as the first African side to reach the last eight of the World Cup in back-to-back tournaments.
