Super Eagles captain Ahmed Musa has effectively drawn the curtain on his career with Nigeria’s senior men’s national team after 15 years of meritorious service.

Musa announced his decision in a statement released on social media on Wednesday, December 17, where he reflected on his journey and the pride of representing his country.

“After a lot of thought, I have decided to retire from international football, bringing to an end almost 15 years with the Super Eagles,” he said.

Musa, who is currently the General Manager of Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) side Kano Pillars, was a regular in the national setup after breaking into the cadet team at the age of 17. He went on to become the most capped player in Super Eagles history, earning 111 international caps.

“Playing 111 matches for my country is something I hold with deep respect,” the Nigerian legend said. “To become the most capped player in the history of Nigerian football is a great honour. Every time I wore the jersey, I understood the responsibility that came with it.”

Aside from his appearance milestone, the 33-year-old was part of the squad that won the 2013 Africa Cup of Nations in South Africa. He also made history as the first Nigerian to score more than once in a FIFA World Cup match, following his brace against Argentina at the 2014 World Cup in Brazil. Four years later, at the 2018 World Cup in Russia, he became the first Nigerian to score in two World Cups, netting twice against Iceland.

“As I step away from international football, I do so with peace and gratitude. I know I gave my best. I know the Super Eagles will continue to move forward. And I know that this bond will never be broken. Once an Eagle, always an Eagle. Thank you, Nigeria. Thank you for everything,” his statement concluded.

Musa bows out of active service with the Super Eagles a few days after assistant captain William Troost-Ekong also hung up his boots. Their retirement comes as the Super Eagles prepare to head to Morocco in pursuit of a fourth continental title.
