The convergence of sports, entertainment, and consumerism at its grandest isn’t something you often see outside the National Football League (NFL) Super Bowl. There’s a reason it’s the United States’ biggest sporting event and one of the most watched globally. It returns this Sunday, February 9, for its 59th edition, where defending champions Kansas City Chiefs will lock horns with the Philadelphia Eagles at the Caesars Superdome in New Orleans.

Super Bowl LIX is already generating plenty of buzz for its multi-faceted appeal: it will be the first Super Bowl ever attended live by a sitting US president, the halftime show will feature 20-time Grammy Award winner Kendrick Lamar with five-time winner SZA as special guest performers, and the Chiefs have a chance to make history as the only team to win three consecutive Super Bowls, a run they started with a 38-35 win over the Eagles in 2023. While the Chiefs are vying for a historic three-peat, the Eagles are focused on redemption and claiming their second Lombardi Trophy, a possibility of great significance to the Nigerian community which has a vested interest in the Eagles’ defensive tackle Morotoluwa Ojomo.

Born in Lagos, Nigeria, Moro Ojomo spent his early years there before his family relocated to California, following a new job opportunity for his mother. After a couple of years on the West Coast, the Ojomos moved to Texas, where the foundation of Moro’s football career was laid. The 23-year-old’s journey to the NFL began at Katy High School in Houston and continued with a solid college career with the Texas Longhorns. His steady rise culminated in being drafted by the Philadelphia Eagles in the seventh round (249th overall) of the 2023 NFL Draft.

Ojomo’s progression and impact with the Eagles squad has been gradual. The 23-year-old played just 6% (68 from eight games) of the defensive snaps in his first season, but this season, the Nigerian-born DT has played 388 snaps and generated 23 pressures, ranking fifth on the team.

His long-awaited first NFL sack came at the perfect moment: a snowy playoff clash against the Los Angeles Rams’ Matthew Stafford, where his clutch play helped the Eagles advance to the NFC Championship Game and earned him commendations from teammates.

Ahead of Sunday’s Super Bowl, The Score has highlighted Ojomo as one of the few advantages the Eagles have over the Chiefs in their redemption bid. Pro Football Focus (PFF) has also named the Nigerian as one of the breakout players to watch in 2025.

Nick Sirianni’s squad isn’t widely favoured against the reigning champions, but if they pull off an upset, Ojomo will join an exclusive group of Nigerians to have won the Super Bowl. He would be the third to do so with the Eagles, following Nelson Agholor and Jay Ajayi, who helped secure the franchise’s first Lombardi Trophy in 2017.

Establishing himself in the NFL and playing a key role in the Eagles’ Super Bowl LIV run is both a source of pride and a foundation for future success for Ojomo, given his humble beginnings. “When you look at my story, what are the odds? The most random kid from Nigeria,” he told Joker Magazine. “He started playing football, and now he’s in the NFL. What are the odds? Just keep believing in yourself and keep working. Just try. You only get one life, so why not give it 110 per cent?”

Meanwhile, Prince Tega Wanogho of Delta State was the last Nigerian to win the Super Bowl, doing so with the Chiefs in 2022 and as an injured reserve in 2023, when he proudly celebrated with the Nigerian flag. The current Chiefs’ roster includes Joshua Uche, Felix Anudike-Uzomah, Charles Omenihu, and Derrick Nnadi — all American footballers with Nigerian heritage.
