When the Super Eagles of Nigeria defeated the Les Sao of Chad 2-0 in an African Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifier at the Ahmadu Bello Stadium in Kadun back in June 2015, not many would have thought that a Netherlands-born and raised player, William Troost-Ekong, who was handed his debut after previous stint at the Young Orange levels, would grow into one of the most dependable figures in the Super Eagles’ modern era.

Today, June 13, 2025, marks exactly 10 years since Ekong first appeared in a competitive match for Nigeria. And while the story of his career so far in the iconic green and white jersey has borne great tales, with room for even more glorious curtain-fall episodes, the impact of the 31-year-old off the pitch for Nigeria is growing to become one that’s remarkable.

The Troost-Ekong Foundation (TEF) began its public engagements in June 2024 with a charity match featuring a host of Nigerian superstars at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium in Uyo, Ekong’s hometown, last year. The charity match featured Nigerian celebrities like Ebuka Obi-Uchendu, Poco Lee, Falz, and rapper Odumodublvck, who delivered the headline music performance. Former Super Eagles stars, including Vincent Enyeama, Carl Ikeme, and current stars like Kelechi Iheanacho and Stanley Nwabali, were also involved in the event. The financial proceeds are being channelled into empowering youth through sports and education, as well as building infrastructure, notably a state-of-the-art Sports & Skills Academy in Akwa Ibom State.

The TEF has announced the 2025 edition of the charity match, set to take place at the Mobolaji Johnson Arena in Onikan, Lagos on June 22.

“The charity football match is a celebration of giving back,’’ said Ekong, who had earlier pledged to donate his earnings from the national team to the foundation’s cause. “It’s an opportunity for us to unite and raise vital funds to support our mission. We’re looking forward to an unforgettable event in Lagos.”

With the theme “Play for Purpose,” the 2025 TEF Charity Match is confirmed to be graced by Super Eagles legends Ahmed Musa, Odion Ighalo, Obafemi Martins, and Victor Osimhen. Odumodublvck, Nwabali, and Ikeme are also set to return.
