Lionel Messi has taken his final bow for Argentina, ending a 21-year international career that saw him become the country’s most decorated and celebrated footballer, in a friendly match against Benin Republic on Wednesday morning, October 7, 2026.

The 39-year-old marked his farewell in fitting fashion, scoring from the penalty spot as Argentina defeated Benin 3-0 at the Estadio Monumental in Buenos Aires.

Messi was also involved in Argentina’s opening two goals, assisting Nicolas Otamendi from the corner for the opener in the 48th minute, before setting up Nico Paz for the second in the 62nd minute. A foul on Agustín Giay in the 68th minute ensured the Argentine captain would end his international career on a fitting note.

More than 85,000 supporters filled the Monumental to celebrate Messi, with the game stopped in the 10th minute for a standing ovation in recognition of his famous No. 10 shirt.

Messi was visibly emotional even before kick-off, wiping away tears as the team bus made its way through crowds of supporters. He later walked onto the pitch alongside his three sons before breaking down again during the national anthem.

After the final whistle, a drone show illuminated the sky above the stadium with images from Messi’s career, including his iconic 2022 World Cup triumph in Qatar.

Messi then addressed the crowd and admitted that saying goodbye to the national team was the saddest moment of his career.

“I would love to keep coming back forever, because playing for the Argentine national team is the most beautiful thing that can happen to you,” he said.

Messi finishes his Argentina career as the country’s record appearance holder and leading goalscorer, with 208 appearances and 126 goals.

His time with the national team also produced two Copa America titles, an Olympic gold medal and the 2022 World Cup, where he finally achieved the major international trophy that had eluded him for much of his career.

He also featured in six World Cups, including the 2026 edition, which eluded him after Argentina lost the final to Spain by a goal. The Barcelona legend scored 21 goals, the second-highest tally in the competition’s history.

Argentina coach Lionel Scaloni admitted that replacing Messi’s presence will be difficult as the national team moves into a new era.

“We can put together a great squad with the new guys coming up, but I’ve never seen that aura in anyone else in my life,” Scaloni said.
