A quartet of Nigerian athletes headlined by Favour Ofili and Kanyinsola Ajayi, alongside Chukwuebuka Enekwechi and Samuel Ogazi, will feature at the 2025 Gyulai István Memorial, also known as the Hungarian Athletics Grand Prix, later Tuesday.

Ofili, who made headlines in June over her reported decision to switch allegiance to Turkey following a series of mismanagement issues from Nigeria’s athletics federation, still competes under Nigeria’s profile while the switch process remains incomplete. The 22-year-old track and field star will contest the women’s 200m against some of the world’s fastest women, including Britain’s Daryll Neita, who has clocked 22.30s this season, Jamaica’s Ashanti Moore, Alexa Sulyán, who boasts a best of 23.12s, and Dutch sprinter Minke Bisschops. Ofili’s personal best in the 200m is 21.96s, with a season’s best of 22.00s.

For Nigeria’s sprint sensation Kanyinsola Ajayi, the men’s 100m will pit him against the current world’s fastest man, Kishane Thompson of Jamaica. Ajayi, who equalled his personal best of 9.92s in July, will also face tough competition from other speedsters, including Ferdinand Omanyala, Africa’s fastest man in history, South Africa’s Akani Simbine, Olympic silver medallist and world leader Kishane Thompson, and seasoned American sprinters Ronnie Baker and Christian Coleman.

Similarly, rising quarter-miler and NCAA champion Ogazi will test himself in the men’s 400m against African champion Muzala Samukonga of Zambia, South Africa’s Zakithi Nene, and Trinidad and Tobago’s Jereem Richards.

Outside the track, African record shot put holder Enekwechi also has a strong challenge ahead. Having matched his African record of 22.10m earlier this season, Enekwechi will face Italy’s Leonardo Fabbri, who has thrown 22.82m this year, Joe Kovacs of the United States, who owns a personal best of 23.23m, and 2023 world leader Rajindra Campbell of Jamaica.

As part of the World Athletics Continental Tour Gold series, the Hungarian Meet will feature other world champions and rising forces across various disciplines. This is the penultimate meeting before the commencement of the World Championships in Tokyo in September.
