The Super Eagles of Nigeria got their 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) campaign underway with a 2–1 win over the Taifa Stars of Tanzania at the Fez Stadium on Tuesday, December 23.

Fresh from the disappointment of the World Cup qualification playoffs, the Super Eagles expectedly started brightly against Tanzania and took a deserved lead through Semi Ajayi’s header in the 36th minute, following a brilliant cross from Alex Iwobi. However, the AFCON 2023 runners-up surrendered the lead about five minutes into the second half, thanks to a defensive lapse that allowed Charles M’Mombwa beat Stanley Nwabali from close range.

The goal infused some urgency into the Super Eagles, and they retook the lead in the 52nd minute through Ademola Lookman. After receiving a pass from Iwobi off the edge of the box, the 2024 CAF Player of the Year swiftly beat his marker to fire in what proved to be the game’s winner.

The Super Eagles’ performance thereafter left a lot to be desired, but they managed to hold on for a vital win as they turn their attention to their second game of the tournament against the Cranes of Uganda on December 27. Meanwhile, the search for Tanzania’s first-ever win at the AFCON continues to look bleak, as they are set to face Tunisia next in Group C.
