Tobi Amusan made history on Wednesday at the 2026 African Senior Athletics Championships in Accra, Ghana, delivering Nigeria’s first gold medal of the competition with a dominant display in the women’s 100m hurdles final.

The world record holder crossed the line in 12.83 seconds, a performance that earned her a third African title in the event, adding to the ones she claimed in Asaba back in 2018 and in Mauritius in 2022. Amusan had looked untouchable from the opening rounds, setting the pace in both the heats and semi-finals before sealing gold in commanding fashion in the final.

Speaking after the race, Amusan said she was not sure of her time due to a timing system malfunction that briefly delayed official results, but made clear that the victory was what counted.

Zimbabwe’s Ashley Miller took silver in 13.24 seconds, denying Nigeria a one-two finish. The bronze, however, stayed green and white. Adaobi Tabugbo, the US-based hurdler, clocked 13.26 to finish third, her first individual senior international medal for the country.

Day 2 ended on a further high for the Nigerian contingent. The quartet of Ezekiel Asuquo, Toheebat Jimoh, Victor Sampson and Patience Okon-George combined to win gold in the mixed 4x400m relay, stopping the clock at 3:16.41 ahead of Botswana and Kenya. Sade Olatoye also contributed silver in the women’s hammer throw with a mark of 69.60 metres.

Rosemary Chukwuma finished behind Cameroon’s Hervé Kole Etame in the women’s 100m final, claiming silver, while Chidera Ezeakor picked up bronze in the men’s 100m final, won by Cameroon’s Emmanuel Eseme.

Nigeria had opened their account on Tuesday with silver and bronze in the women’s discus, through Divine Oladipo and Obiageri Amaechi, respectively.
