Three years after its record-breaking success on the global stage, Nigerian blockbuster film The Black Book is set for a sequel, Old Scores. The Nigerian Netflix film, directed and produced by Editi Effiong, gears up for Nigeria’s biggest production with the addition of Severance Producer Nicky Weinstock.

In a social media post released yesterday, February 22nd, 2025, Editi Effiong expressed his excitement about the forthcoming film The Black Book 2, set to be released in the cinemas. The filmmaker divulged the film’s large-scale production, citing an unprecedented capital raise supported by international companies such as Adino Capital, Mango Tree, and Blooming Caravan.

Effiong further disclosed that the film’s biggest Nigerian production is backed by a Nigerian and International crew, and 300 cast members joining from countries including Nigeria, the UK, the US, and Japan.

Weinstock’s Invention Studios is reported to produce The Black Book 2 along with Effiong’s Anakle Films. In the highly anticipated sequel, Effiong also returns as writer and director. For the filmmaker, writing the script alongside Bunmi Ajakaiye, while working with Nicky Weinstock and other board members, has been frenetic over the last two years.

But with Nicholas Weinstock, the Emmy-nominated producer of Severance, on board to produce The Black Book 2: Old Scores, Effiong assures viewers they can expect the best from the revenge thriller. As the film aims to meet the high standards of the 2023 hit.

In 2023, the original The Black Book achieved historical success, hitting the no. 3 spots on Netflix’s global chart while ranking in the top 10 in more than 69 countries worldwide. Made for just $1 million, the Nigerian hit film amassed more than 20 million views worldwide. It starred lead character Richard Mofe-Damijo as Paul Edima, a retired hitman and deacon, who takes revenge after his son is framed and killed by a corrupt police unit.

In the sequel, The Black Book 2: Old Scores, Richard Mofe-Damijo returns as Paul Edima, with Wongi Ibom as sidekick. While Paul continues his assault on the corrupt system, the film will explore a new story and new characters, set against the backdrop of the Niger Delta.

The Hollywood Reporter exclusively reported that a blurb for the film states that the second installment will “delve deeper into themes of justice, redemption, and societal unrest in contemporary Nigeria.”

In the report, Effiong boldly asserted that The Black Book showed how local stories can spark global conversations. “With Old Scores, we’re not just continuing a story, we’re continuing a movement — one that affirms the power of African voices to shape cinema worldwide,” Effiong said.

Weinstock also added, “What Editi has created with The Black Book is unique in its power: not just a great action film but a film franchise of extraordinary skill, ambition, and worldwide commercial appeal.” He further said, “It’s a phenomenal time for African and international creators to be delivering work at the quality level of traditional Hollywood and actually beyond – and to be stunning global audiences with sheer imagination and excellence. And there’s no better example of that than Old Scores and its game-changing potential.”

The Black Book 2 isn’t Weinstock’s debut Nigerian project, as he is producing the forthcoming Clarissa, Arie, and Chuko Esiri’s Nigerian-set modern adaptation of the Virginia Woolf novel Mrs. Dalloway. The film stars Sophie Okonedo, David Oyelowo, and Ayo Edebiri.

Weinstock’s production credits also include Queenpins (2021), Dinner in America (2020), and the 53 Emmy-nominated AppleTV+ hit Severance.
