September is here, and Nollywood continues to build on its record of producing high-quality stories and groundbreaking films, as it did earlier this year.

Last month, August opened with promising, must-see true-crime thrillers, epics, and intriguing drama short films like Almajiri, Before We Fall Asleep, Ikenga, and others. September promises to be an eyegasm for Nollywood cinephiles with the array of noteworthy releases arriving this month.

Amidst adulthood chaos, 9-5 and creative hustles, there’s something for everyone to watch. Here’s our roundup of Nollywood movies to see this September.

A Mama Deola Wedding Story (September 3rd)

One of the most anticipated Nollywood films, A Mama Deola Wedding Story follows popular comedy skit maker Folagade Banks’ character Mama Deola, who takes the main character in this comedy-drama.

In the film, Mama Deola goes to extreme lengths in handling the endless chaos to fund her son Femi’s dream wedding with Demilola. The film captures family, humour, and the chaos of weddings in Nigeria. Starring Omowunmi Dada and Rotimi Salami as the couple, the film is directed by Femi Adebayo and produced by Folagade Banks.

It also features an ensemble cast of veteran and star actors including Shaffy Bello, Bukky Wright, Iya Rainbow, Erica Nlewedim, Toyin Abraham, Akin Lewis and Femi Adebayo. This film also marks Folagbade Bank’s debut feature film, and is exclusively streaming on Kava.

Confusion Na Wa (September 3rd)

The 2013-previously released Kenneth Gyang’s dark comedy follows a group of strangers whose lives become connected over the course of 24 hours. The trouble begins when Charles and Chichi find a misplaced phone and decide to use its contents to blackmail its owner, Emeka, setting off a chain of random events neither of them can control.

The award-winning film, written by Gyang and Tom Rowlands-Rees, stars Ramsey Nouah, Tony Goodman, OC Ukeje, Ali Nuhu and Tunde Aladese. Available to stream on Kava.

Ordinary People (September 4th)

Moses Inwang’s crime thriller Ordinary People is set in the peaceful residents of Mirage Estate whose carefully maintained lives begin to unravel as buried secrets and present-day dangers surface.The eight-episode Netflix action series explores the power of money, deceit, betrayal, and deep-rooted paranoia as pasts resurface, testing loyalty, ambitions, and survival.

The series features a star-studded Nollywood ensemble, including Ramsey Nouah, Adunni Ade, Michelle Dede, Chidi Mokeme, Lasisi Elenu, Sharon Ooja, Jackie Appiah, Uche Montana, Eddy Watson, Shawn Faqua, and Gbenga Titiloye.

Nne Mgbafor (September 4th)

In the historical epic, Nne Mgbafor, a film inspired by Ohafia warrior traditions from Abia State, the story follows a woman who defies traditional customs to change her people’s destiny. Produced by Kingsley Uma Kalu Mmecha and directed by Edward Uka, the movie features Femi Branch, Zubby Michael, and Sam Dede. It explores themes like courage, sacrifice, defiance, and cultural heritage.

Invitation To Kill (September 11th)

Chuks ‘Big Tiger’ Obaze’s invitation to kill follows Julian, an agro-businessman and devoted father who loses his livestock business and marriage. As he’s forced to rebuild his life, he faces betrayal and suspenseful twists.

The thriller explores themes of betrayal, resilience, family, suspense, and ambition, with the cast including Kalu Ikeagwu, Greg Ojefua, Oma Iyasara, Tonia Chukwurah, Annabel Thaddeus, and Efua Bona.

One Gidi Night (September 11th)

Inside One Gidi Night, a desperate night in Lagos finds a seemingly good man in a situation where survival comes at a high cost. The crime thriller centres on high-stakes desperation, survival, and family dynamics.

Produced, directed and written by James Abinibi, the cast includes Gabriel Afolayan, Uzor Arukwe, Wumi Toriola, Ibrahim Yekini, Idia Aisien, Ibrahim Yekini, Kelvin Ikeduba, and Ali Nuhu.

19 (September 11th)

Written and directed by Tola Odunsi, 19 is a crime thriller film that succinctly captures themes of ambition, deception, and corruption within the cybercrime and fraud world. The story follows Ndubuisi Madueke, a young man whose rise into Nigeria’s cybercrime scene leads to his arrest and a reckoning with the choices that shaped his life.

It stars renowned actors including Stan Nze, Ademola Adedoyin, Bisola Aiyeola, Sola Sobowale, Deyemi Okanlawon, Charles Okafor, Boma Akpore, and William Benson.

Starlomo (September 25th)

Popular Nigerian actor and comedian Kamo State makes his producing and leading-man cinema debut in Starlomo, directed by Kayode Kasum. The dramatic comedy explores the cost of fame, survival, and identity amidst the desire for ambition and resilience. The story follows the actor’s personal origin journey, starting from Ibadan before navigating a larger stage, interspersed with chaotic and humorous domestic situations.

The cast also includes Oluwabukunmi Adeaga-Ilori (KieKie), Odunlade Adekola, Ibrahim Chatta, Mike Afolarin, Lateef Adedimeji, Abiola Adebayo, Olakanmi Adepeju Itunnu, Ajibola Akindele, Samuel Bankole, amongst others.

Black Market (September 26th)

Fatimah Binta Gimsay’s directorial debut film Black Market is a highly anticipated film set to break a Guinness World Record for the largest attendance of a film screening in a single venue.

The story follows five market women who, amidst the chaos of fuel scarcity, become involved in a smuggling operation. When a rival kidnaps a child, their survival and loyalty are put to the test. The film features an ensemble cast including Lateef Adedimeji, Linda Ejiofor-Suleiman, Omowunmi Dada, Scarlet Gomez, Itele D Icon, Teniola Aladese, Susan Pwajok, and Uzor Arukwe.

Produced by Red Circle’s Nora Awolowo and Nicole Ofoegbu, with executive production from Omowunmi Dada, and written by Fatimah Binta Gimsay and Abdul Tijani-Ahmed. Black Market is set to premiere at Tafawa Balewa Square (TBS).
