Aside from the themes and how incredibly cute and hot Adam Brody looks in Nobody Wants This, the most interesting detail is the connection to Gossip Girl. Kristen Bell, who voices Gossip Girl, also shares the screen with Adam Brody. Meanwhile, the character Blair Waldorf, played by Leighton Meester, from the same series, is married to Adam Brody in real life. What are the odds? It’s one of those coincidences that makes you smile like a five-year-old girl who just found her favorite toy under the Christmas tree.

The meet-cute between Joanne and Noah in Nobody Wants This has definitely earned a spot in the romcom meet-cutes hall of fame. It’s such a beautiful and overly adorable moment to witness. Contrary to the title, everyone wants this. Yes, please! Everyone truly desires this. One of the most sought-after yet rarely achieved elements in relationships is reassurance. When you’re involved with someone, you often want to know that no matter what, they’ve got your back and still feel those enchanting emotions for you. It’s a necessity. It’s the funniest, sweetest, most raw, romantic, and authentic thing we’ve seen in a while.

Kristen plays a free-spirited 30-something woman who co-hosts an increasingly successful podcast about sex and relationships with her sister Morgan (Justine Lupe). She embodies the quintessential agnostic, almost atheist, 30-something woman. In this film, Brody plays a rabbi who has recently come out of a serious relationship, one that both families believed would lead to an engagement. The story portrays Noah as a contemporary rabbi with a progressive outlook, effortlessly balancing a slight edge while wholeheartedly committing to love. Moreover, when he meets Joanne at a party, the spark between them is instantaneous and palpable, creating a magnetic connection that neither can ignore. This encounter is refreshingly authentic, resonating with viewers and making the budding romance feel truly believable.

The chemistry and banter between them are simply everything. It feels real, perhaps because they’re friends off-screen or simply because they’re both great actors, but the dynamic is just fantastic. Beneath it all, the emotional stakes are palpable. Their differing cultures, the conflict between faith and secularism, family disapproval, potential ostracism, the impact on Noah’s career, and the limitations on Joanne’s freedom if she were to become a rabbi’s wife—all these genuine issues create obstacles to happiness with no easy solutions.

It’s refreshing to see a male character portrayed as a genuinely good person who stands up to his mother when he feels his partner is being disrespected and goes out of his way to ensure she feels comfortable and valued. The whole toxic bad-boy trope is likely for teens, but for someone like Joanne in the series, having a partner who is not only mature but also a good person is perfect. Brody’s character isn’t one where his partner has to work hard to earn his affection; he’s ready and willing to put in the effort as well.

Episode 6 where he tells her, “Joanne, I’m on your side. I can handle you,” probably healed a lot of past relationship traumas. It speaks to those experiences where people have felt like they were too much or too cumbersome for someone to handle.

The series gets deep into the complexities of relationships, showcasing the emotional nuances that often accompany romantic connections. Overthinkers typically seek reassurance and clarity in their interactions, longing for understanding and validation of their feelings. By presenting relatable characters like Joanne and Noah, who struggle with their own insecurities and uncertainties, the movie encourages viewers to reflect on their feelings rather than spiral into endless analyses. The narrative demonstrates that it’s okay to embrace vulnerability and uncertainty in relationships, offering a reassuring reminder that love doesn’t always come with a clear-cut roadmap. This promotes self-acceptance and reduces the pressure to have everything figured out.

Moreover, the series’ witty dialogue and genuine chemistry between the leads provide moments of levity that can alleviate the weight of overthinking. As viewers witness Joanne and Noah in love, they may find themselves laughing at the characters’ missteps and relatable anxieties, fostering a sense of camaraderie. Overthinkers often want to feel heard and supported, and the series highlights the importance of open communication and compassion in relationships. The humor and warmth of the story create a safe space for viewers to explore their thoughts and feelings about love and connection, encouraging them to lighten up and take things one step at a time.
