A new generation of storytellers is emerging, using their voices, visions, and influence to shape the future of African entertainment.

Why are artistes entering film? Is it strategic career expansion, cultural influence, money, longevity — or simply the growing convergence of Nigeria’s music and film industries? Here’s how eight of Nigeria’s biggest music stars are making their mark on the big screen.

Ayra Starr — Children of Blood and Bone (2027)

Rather than starting with indie projects, Ayra Starr‘s acting debut puts her in a Gina Prince-Bythewood blockbuster alongside Viola Davis, Idris Elba, and Cynthia Erivo — instantly positioning her as a global creative force.

Based on Tomi Adeyemi’s bestselling novel, Children of Blood and Bone brings a new world of magic, power, and resistance to life, with Ayra Starr in a pivotal role. The fantasy film is set for release on 15th January 2027.

Tiwa Savage — Water & Garri (2024)

By executive producing Water & Garri alongside director Meji Alabi, Tiwa bypassed the traditional route of waiting to be cast.

Released on 10th May 2024, the drama centres on the emotional struggle of a successful woman facing her past, exploring home, identity, migration, and reconnecting with one’s roots.

Falz — Jenifa’s Diary (2015) & Brotherhood (2022)

Falz’s career in film is the gold standard for how a musician can cross over into acting and production, making him arguably the most successful and versatile “dual-threat” entertainer in Nigerian history.

His acting debut came via Jenifa’s Diary in 2015. “I connected with Funke Akindele through a mutual friend, which led to my casting. I’m super excited about the role’s success,” Falz says.

He went on to star in Brotherhood (released 23rd September 2022), a crime-action thriller and drama about twin brothers Wale (Falz) and Akin (Tobi Bakre), who are orphaned when their parents are killed on New Year’s Day on their way home from a crossover church service.

Davido — Coming 2 America (2021)

In mid-2026, Davido officially announced he is serving as co-executive producer on two major upcoming films in partnership with his longtime music video director, Dammy Twitch — building on an acting debut that goes back to Coming 2 America.

The comedy follows Akeem as he discovers a son in Queens who could inherit Zamunda’s throne, forcing him to confront royal traditions, family tensions, and political threats to secure his kingdom’s future.

Ladipoe — Christmas in Lagos (2024)

Rappers naturally make great actors because they spend their lives building characters, writing scripts (verses), and understanding cadence. And Ladipoe was brilliant in his acting debut.

Christmas in Lagos, released 20th December 2024, follows four friends navigating love, heartbreak, and cultural expectations during festive Detty December, with Fiyin’s feelings complicated by Elo’s fiancée.

Reminisce — King of Boys (2018)

Reminisce went from delivering bars to delivering one of Nollywood’s most memorable villains in his acting debut, King of Boys.

The political crime thriller, released on 26th October 2018, centres on power, ambition, and the Lagos underworld — exploring unbridled ambition, maternal sacrifice, betrayal, and the toxic nature of power.

Chike — Gangs of Lagos (2023)

Chike is no newcomer to film, having proven his range early with a prominent role as Mayowa Badmus in over 100 episodes of Africa Magic’s hit telenovela, Battleground.

His feature film debut, Gangs of Lagos (7th April 2023), directed by Jade Osiberu, is a crime thriller portraying the intense survival and emotional struggles of three lifelong friends growing up in the heart of Isale Eko.

Simi — Mokalik (2019)

Debuting under a visionary filmmaker like Kunle Afolayan immediately protected Simi’s acting profile. Mokalik wasn’t a standard, flashy pop-star vehicle; it was a deeply grounded, predominantly Yoruba-language art piece.

Released on 31st May 2019, the drama-comedy follows a young middle-class boy spending a day as a mechanic apprentice to learn about real life.
