The Pick: Pa Salieu Goes Full Circle on “Round & Round”

Pa Salieu’s latest track, “Round & Round,” finds the British-Gambian rapper leaning deeper into melodic versatility while still keeping his distinct intensity intact. Produced by Felix Joseph and AoD, the track is a fluid mix of UK rap grit and Afrobeats influences, signaling an evolution in Pa Salieu’s sound. Known for his storytelling and raw lyricism, Pa taps into his vocal range on this track, showing off a more polished, contemplative tone, which contrasts with the fiercer delivery that powered earlier hits like “Frontline.” The track has already gathered traction as part of Pa Salieu’s ongoing artistic resurgence following a series of well-received singles like “Epiphany” and “Crash” earlier this year.

Visually, Salieu elevates “Round & Round” with a live session directed by Geerten Harmens. Salieu performs amid warm hues, reinforcing the contrast between the warmth of his West African roots and the cold realities of his Coventry upbringing. His delivery in this performance is charged with gravitas, showing a new dimension to his stage presence.

“Round & Round” lyrically loops around ideas of love and resilience. The song is structured around themes of dedication, vulnerability, and support, as Pa Salieu narrates a partnership built on shared strength and healing, conveyed through his tight, controlled delivery, which vacillates between tenderness and steadfastness. This stylistic shift tells of a notable evolution in Pa Salieu’s artistry. He’s retained his gritty essence while stepping into more melodic territory, broadening his sonic palette without sacrificing his edge. As he shifts between rap’s hard exterior and melodic vulnerability, Salieu reveals a dexterity that’s rare, suggesting that he’s an artist unafraid to explore and redefine his boundaries.
